I would go with the GreyVF750F advice.

ZTimely and interesting reading. Seems I am in the same boat. amoung other things, maybe it is time to dump my original 2006 battery too.

Well I have done some testing and a few things are point to the RR, that said I wanted to run this past the group. Charged the batt just to be sure but only reached 12.5v thought that may have been enough so I proceeded with some testing. I only achieved 12.5v @ 5000 rpm, makes me think RR but every thing I have read says batt should be 13.5 ish. Would this have an effect on the out come? Batt does have a few years on it.

When I tested the stator wires for resistance and continuity they all checked out fine. All other tests I made fell in specs as well. Again, makes me think RR. When I wired the burnt wires up and ran the bike I did not see an feel any excessive heat from the wires either. Of course I only ran for about 6-10 minutes to get hot and conduct test.

Is there such a thing as conducting a bench test for the RR? I was looking at the RR's on wire my bike but do not want to part with $145 if I do not have to yet.

Well, now that I vomited out a bunch of fodder, what do you think? Am I on the right track?

One more quick thing. I have read that the upgraded OEM RR (SH689DA) model may produce a tad lower output than what the tech manuals have to say. !3.7v vice the published 14.5v or higher. Any insight there either?

    Thanks again everyone.

There is a bench test outlined in the factory service manual.

A universal 5 wire shunt type rr for less money will work. It will require soldering and may require minor modification for mounting.

    Weak Battery

Yes it would have an effect, and i think your battery is not up to the job. Fully charged it should be higher than 12.5. At 5k rpm the RR should output a higher voltage, but if your battery has an internal short then the RR output voltage could be pulled down by the high current load of the defective battery.

Charge the battery fully, say at 1 amp for 10 hours then measure the voltage. Then apply a heavy load on the battery and measure the voltage while under load. The results of this test will give you a good idea if the battery is toast or not.

But chances are the RR may be bad--the 12.5 you were measuring was just the battery voltage, not the output of a functioning RR. Was the charging light on the instrument panel illuminated during your test?--i'll bet it was the whole time. It should go out as the revs go up if the RR is working, but get the battery situation sorted out first, then run the RR tests.

My 2 cents...My ST1100 battery has never read over 12.5V, but has been working fine that way for several years. My newer VFR battery has never read over 12.9V and has provided the same great service.

As for the charging voltage supplied. I'm sure a 13.7V supply would be fine, as it is the amperage supplied that actually matters.

If the output from the stator is good, then the RR is probably toast.

Guesswork about R/Rs, stators and batteries hoping they won't crap out is voodoo economics. If they go, you stop. The saving thing is that when you stop you don't have to text at the ton or put up with all that wind noise when calling the tow truck, making reservations for a room at the inn, waiting for the local shop to open that's 100 miles away and eating at Micky Ds, which exacerbates even more heartburn.

The closest real bike repair to us coasties is Fred's Honda in Corvallis, the guy in Philomath that really likes mostly to work on BMWs, the guy in Florence that does mostly Honda generator and lawnmower service and a real repair in Newport: All Ride Motorsports. See Pat Harris. He's the mechanic.
