Oddly having a verifiable Convict background is said with pride here but the truth is the majority of Australians do not, I'm a 1st Generation Australian from European and my wife 8th from Irish/Scottish free migration backgrounds.

Besides the physical reminders of our very brutal Convict past being the still standing Picturesque 2 century old mortar-less rock walls lining farms on some of my favourite twisting back roads I believe the Convicts biggest legacy to the Australian psyche is an inbuilt distrust of those in Authority and a healthy skepticism of our Political Leaders.

IE Anyone who actually "wants" to be a Leader is obviously someone not to be blindly followed, this works to ensure that Australia has a strong Middle class driven Democracy with a comparably weak single Leader making decisions. By "comparable" the extreme example of a "strong" political Leader would be North Korea's recently deceased Kim Jong Il.

Agree it's not a perfect system that often results in flawed compromises on balance seems to work better for us as a Nation.

Not so sure about that, I remember the early '70s when as a 10 year old being able to buy unlimited boxes of any calibre bullets without question from my local KMart to use on my Aunties Farm being far safer than now where there is very strict State gun control. These days the more violent Criminals have no problem buying guns from underground sources to use on those that do not.

@ John... I wish there was such a thing as a perfect system. Just look at the goat fuck we got going on over here.

@rainbow... I didn't expect to offend anyone. Most everyone on this board can take a joke.

Sorry must have missed it, I learnt very early in my work related trips to Georgia in the late '90s / early '00s not to make jokes about Guns, Religion or Politics.

Re Guns, remember in Hooters discussing over a beer the merits of strict Gun Control with a close US Colleague ( a Libertarian ) about the then recent Port Arthur Massacre, my view was if he didn't have guns there'd be no massacre his view was if every one else there had guns there'd be no massacre either, at the time I couldn't find fault in his logic.

Some jokes about guns, religion or politics are OK in some circles but never jokes about NASCAR.

Nah, it has been ruined by socialists, fags and Maori activists. It is a country divided amongst itself. Not too different from the USA at the moment, really.

I think if you start at one end and go to the other you might get a few of the right people.. everything else would be considered collateral damage.. use this :chaingun:

every Aussie that I know wouldn't touch Fosters.... as they say it is a bucket of piss.... of course when they come over here they drink a crap load of Corona..... in regards to the convict thing.. one of my friends is a Federal Marshal.. His ancestry goes back to the prisoner days... he doesn't talk about the family tree much but I have had hours of conversations with him (for my anthropology class ) about it and some folks are proud of their lineage....

UK was dumping all sort of folk in various places for sundry offences. A few may have even landed in the good ol' USofA. Maybe not according to grandma because everyone knows that grandmas never lie.

A little history on WWWW&H there got to be so many folks living South of the South of France.

Convicts in Australia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Most that were dumped in the US were Irish. The St.Patrick's Day parade in NYC proves that.

It always makes me laugh, when Americans try to make jokes about Australia's convict past. - The American colonies were used as penal settlements a long time before Australia ever was.
The only reason criminals were sent here was that they could no longer be shipped to the New World.

Back on the topic of beer and Australias convict past just realised my favourite drink this Summer has managed to combine the 2 together in a most pleasurable way.

“One Fifty Lashes is a refreshing Australian-style cloudy pale ale with restrained bitterness and a clean, smooth finish. It’s an easier-drinking beer than others in the James Squire range and a familiar style that Australian beer drinkers will recognise. The use of malted wheat also adds to its refreshing character delivering a beer with a fruity nose and hints of passionfruit, grapefruit and citrus,”

I like NASCAR and F1, darnit, and think of Aussies in a good way, like Canadians of the southern hemisphere but with more vulgarity and attitude.

James Squire was a Convict of the first Fleet who bought his freedom by being Australia's first Beer brewer.

The " Jame Squire " company who brews One Fifty Lashes is a small sized brewery which is happily not far from my workplace but admit it's owned by a mainstream brewing company. Not fussed who owns it as long as the Beer is brewed right and tastes good. By the way I'm contented drinking one now as I'm typing this.
