Can I use this motor as is?

    I just picked up a used engine on ebay for my 84 vf500f. It looks to be in pretty good condition. I ran a compression check and leak down test and here are the results.
    Cylinder #1 112 and 10% leakdown
    Cylinder #2 100 and 10% leakdown
    Cylinder #3 117 and 10% leakdown
    Cylinder #4 111 and 10% leakdown.

    I'm most worried about the #2 cylinder since it's the odd ball. It seemed odd that all 4 cylinders had the same leak down numbers but I checked each twice and checked the tester and it seems to be fine.

    I was in the process of rebuilding another engine when I found this one, and if I can use it for now, then I can hold off spending the money to get the heads re-built and can be riding by spring.

    I believe that if your compression shows less than 10% difference between the cylinders that you are good to go. Also, it appears that your compression numbers are okay, not great, but okay. Good luck on the project.

    Thanks Porschebob for the input. Anybody else want to weigh in on this? I'm planning on installing this motor this weekend and don't want to go to the trouble if I'm just going to have to remove it and rebuild it right away.

    Seems to me that it's the #3 cylinder that's the oddball, anyway these numbers are pretty low. This guy says 100 lbs/cyl is an engine on "deaths doorway."

    Before installing engine: Try squirting some oil in each cylinder and testing again - if the compression(s) go up that means your rings are worn out if they stay the same do a valve adjustment - if that fixes it cool if not you're looking at valve/head work.

    Thanks chesthing. The compression test was done after squirting some WD40down the spark plug holes. Hadn't thought about adjusting the valves:frown: I'll give that a try and see what happens.

    Just a suggestion, but you might want to try some motor oil and re-do the compression test. I do not believe WD-40 is thick enough nor does it have the characterisitics of motor oil to lube the rings properly.

    Good point vman38. Hadn't thought about that. Guess I'll re-do the test. I imagine I'll only need a small amount. Would a teaspoon full be about right? Should I just dump it down the spark plug hole and let the piston move it around when I crank it?

    should not take much. If you can get a small squeeze squirt bottle, put some oil in it, prolly about half full, then squirt a little in the cyclinder, that should do it. I have never had to do this, so I do not know the correct amount to use.
