So, my buddy came accross a tank on ebay for $20 on ebay. It has a few dents, but it can be repaired. He purchased it for me, I don't know why I would need another petrol tank. lol But it is pretty cool. Only problem is that it came off a 6th gen, and I have a 5th gen. Does anyone know if it will be worth it to swap? Is there enough clearance (airbox etc.)? The fuel pump and the other "plug ins" are exactly the same. I would love to do this, please help me.

The 6th gen tank will mount fine on the 5th gen frame with no interference with airbox and such. The front mount bolts line up perfectly, but the rear mount holes are not aligned. You will need to drill the 6th gen tank's mount area so you can line up the holes. You will get just a bit more petrol in the tank. Your fuel sending unit and pump will work too.

Scroll about 1/2 way down this page - it will show you how this was accomplished - pic heavy.

    GET BENT!!! - VFR Discussion

Page forward to the bottom of page 9 for a later mod to the rear tank mount that had something to do with some vibrations. You'll have to trim the 5th gen fairings to clear the 6th gen tank - that's shown in the pics. You will pick up a bit of capacity with this mod. It's a subtle and good looking swap. Good luck with the project.

This now makes lots of sense as to why I allways liked Canuck's bike soooooo much, never noticed the tank was different!! Using the upper half of the 6th gen hinge/rear mount seems the easier way to go IMO, but I guess moving the holes ain't so bad on a $20 tank!!

Exactly! The tank is so subtle it's easy to miss - something just 'looks different' but it's not obvious. That's what's so cool about that bike. The more you look at it the more you see. Check out his post in August with the clutch cover that has the clear window. It draws a crowd wherever it goes.

Have to say that bike looks pretty good after all the work that has been done on it.

That link helped a lot. I did it in a similar fashion. Didn't have time to find washers but, I made them out of electrical tape. Works just fine. here are some pics. Btw I ordered a sixth gen tank hinge and bolt, you can use the old nut. Just need paint and tons of cleaning left. Sorry for the late reply, just caught up with school and work. I'm working on my vfr a few hours a day.
