Anybody bought one of the ebay no lock gas caps? I am looking at getting a black gas cap and I am curious about the quality of those. Mostly I want to know if they stay sealed over the long haul. BK Fuel Gas Cap for HONDA CBR 250 400 600 600F 900 1000 RR 1100XX VFR800 VTEC | eBay
I know guys that have gotten multiple versions of the cheap knock off racing caps with no sealing problems. Be warned, they WILL change color quickly when exposed to sunlight, like, a month or two quickly.
I bought one of those cheap Chinese no lock gas caps off Ebay for my RC51 that's very similar to the one you posted Berea. The quality of the CNC machine work is actually pretty good. The base lines up perfectly with the mounting holes on the gas tank, the top of the base lines up nicely with the top of the gas tank, and the cap screws in snug and securely. There's a thin rubber O-ring on the cap that seals it to the base and a fairly thick rubber quad ring on the base that seals it tightly to the gas tank. Never had any problems at all with fuel leakage while using that gas cap and base. There are however a few caveats Berea. Where these cheap screw type no lock gas caps fall short are in the quality of the anodizing and the super fine threading used on the cap and base. My cap and base were both originally a very dark Black. As you can see in my pics the base has faded out to a sort of soft chocolate Brown. I used this cap and base on my bike for two summer riding seasons only. To screw/unscrew the cap requires four full turns. Cross thread those super fine threads just once and you're screwed. Screw that gas cap in just a tiny little bit too tightly on those super fine threads then ride around with that Black gas cap baking and expanding under the blazing hot heat of the sun and at your next gas stop you're screwed. I've found that a much better solution for no lock gas caps are the 1/4 turn quick release type. This particular one is made by LighTech and I'll be using it on my '03,I'm currently using one of these on my RC51. Not gonna kid you though Berea that LighTech brand cap is fairly expensive, however I have seen much cheaper versions of these same 1/4 turn quick release type gas caps offered on Ebay in the past for the VFR. Here's a short vid from OPP Racing that shows how that 1/4 turn quick release cap works.
Awesome info. I definitely do not want a chocolate brown gas cap that is finicky. I am not known for my precision when it comes to starting fine threads.
