Has the bike sat around in very cold weather for any extended periods of time? One of the guys at work has an '05 R6 that he had track-prepped and "forgot" or was lazy and didnt change the water out for coolant. The water froze near the intake and it screwed up his idle big time. It was idling at 4k rpms. The tech's managed to make it idle right, but now it won't cool itself down. They are looking at something in the throttle bodies right now trying to figure it out.

Really sounds temp sensor related to me. The bike thinks it is cold so it is keeping the idle high for warm up. Perhaps a thermostat or coolant related issue. I have seen this in cars before, top up the coolant and bingo things start to work. 4k seems a bit high even for a warm up though, I don't know what an 04 behaves like normally.

My Duc does this till the temp comes up to 120 or so.
