I plan on drag racing this summer on my 91 (mainly test n tunes) just for fun... what mods would help the bike except for the obvious (exhaust, jet kit, pair mod)

ways to lose unnecessary weight also?
better suspension? is there any good rear shocks that bolt on??
and yes i kno my best bet would be buying a gsxr, r6, 636, but i want to use my vfr....

I have a complete OEM exhaust header assembly from 3rd gen. Could be used to build your own lighter header assembly while keeping your own on hand and original in case your efforts fail or you want to return the bike to OEM.

can add to my trade offer on 5 spoke for 8 spoke

    might have rear plastic.

I also have heads and cams, rods and pistons.

If a guy was going to build a drag racer, parts could come in handy in machining custom light weight aluminum components for high RPM.

seems to me, a bigger bore would help with torque off the line, but after that, a drag racer is after peak HP. Therefore you'd be more interested in light alum pistons and rods, polished intake manifolds, and adjusted cam timing.

If you were really interested in drag racing, you'd trade off the heavy pig single sided swing arm for a much lighter rear end.

then after it's all done, you'll find that it doesn't perform as well as everyone else and you can't win so you sell it for a 5th or 6th gen with a super charger.

and you probably don't do any of it unless you are already sufficiently funding your 401k plan because it's all a huge money pit.

I ran my 91 quite a few times on the strip when I live in Wichita and there really wasn't anything else to do. I found the biggest issue was gearing. It was hard to launch because first gear was too tall. It either bogged, wheelied and then boged or lit up the rear tire. Hard on clutches! Better have some spares handy. I dropped and strapped the front end and softened up the rear preload to get as much grip as possible. My best runs were around 117 mph at 12.2ish. It was really consistent! The worst part was watching shitty drivers drive around you on the big end because they had an extra 50hp on tap. I could get off the line faster but they would run me down. Inevitably, you will want more power, much more power!

+2 on that. The 91 is a fun track bike but watch the ground clearance. It will teach you how to drag a knee!
