Anybody want to post up pics / suggestions on adding power outlets around the front fairing / triple clamp area? I tried a couple searches but didn't find much. I got a Garmin last year and wired it up to the battery. I'd like to have an outlet on the triples for running the Garmin / phone charger / heated gear /etc, preferably dis-connectable. The Powerlets / cigarette outlets are options but I feel they'd take up too much room and may not be water proof. SAE connectors are another option. So who's got what? This is on a 2003 VFR w/ ABS.
Here's mine. I've been happy with them. The cords are a bit too long so I wrap them around the stem of the techmount. http://vfrworld.com/forums/gear-accessories/34161-unique-powerlet-install.html
Thanks for the info guys, I'll check into the Powerlets. If you use these, do you jumper off one outlet for multiple accessories? I may give these a shot: http://switchcraft.com/Documents/NPB583 - sealed power plug & jack100315.pdf
I have two outlets, one for my evest and one for my GPS, two different locations. But there are Y splitters to plug in multiple itmes if you want, but that starts to look pretty messy and be a pain to deal with. Years ago, the guy from Powerlet also made me a custom plug that went into my powerlet outlet on my dash, and had two wires coming out of it, one fairly short straight one that went to my GPS and one longer pigtail one that went to my radar detector. It was truly custom as the wires were based on the mounts I used and it had the connectors to my specific units. Guy was super nice about it, and the charge was totally reasonable. If I remember, but it was a long time ago, it cost slightly less than if I bought a Y connector and two seperat wires for my units. As for the switchcraft option, they look well made and all, but why? What benefit would that be over the Powerlet units? I totally get that if you are good with electrical stuff you could work up a workable solution fairly easy, but why engineer and develop something when there is already something off the shelf that could do it? I could see if the Powerlet stuff were super expensive or hard to get or poor quality or something; that you would look at your own solution. But they are fairly cheap for what you get, high quality easy to get, and has all the design and testing part done for you, meaning it saves you some time. And not just for the outlets, but also the power cords. What I mean is that OK, you work up a nice quality plug for your GPS using the switchcraft plug; work is done, you are happy, and it was a few extra hours of work, but a couple bucks cheaper, but you are happy. Next year your GPS unit falls off/breaks/or you like a new model, now you have to do the work again on a cord, as opposed to call up powerlet and say I need a cord for a XYZ model GPS. Or you decide that while you only use your GPS on longer trips, you would like to use your iPod on your commute; again you have to come up with a new wire, as opposed to just reaching out to Powerlet and being done for like $24. I understand when something isn't out that that does what you want, or does it poorly, coming up with a solution on your own is great -- certainly. But whne there is a viable off the shelf solution, why screw around?
