That's some tunnel-sound goodness...must create a lot of "wtf? looks" when people first hear it!
Honestly, I was thinking that it'd have been nice to hear a turbo blow-off too but...just sayin' (next mod?).

cute bum, where is she from? ;)

gah, i hate this! looked at a couple bikes in the last few days, what is with nobody keeping maintenance records and asking far too much for obviously abused bikes?
the bike i really want is still up for grabs but is a 10hour round trip away so i'm trying to sort out a date where i can look at a couple of bikes in the area (incase it's a 3 dressed as a 9) vs waste my time for just one!

i did have a question, how are the 1990-97 bikes for standing up to big miles? i found a few a couple hours south of me in Seattle but all seem to have 40-60k miles on them. is that a lot for these engines?

That bee-hind, sir, was born, raised and continues to live with me and our 4 kids in Ottawa.
    It's all the blonde 5-'4", 115 lb. 34C goodness I can handle.

Don't be afraid of mileage. These motors are renowned for their longevity. But have you looked at this one, locally?

    Indeed, sir! Indeed!

No, it's out of the price range I am limiting myself to! If I can justify that, there's no reason i cant justify the slightly more for a 1000monster! I'm more partial to the older bikes style, the 90-97 would likely go naked and get high bars.

The V4 motors are pretty solid. Yes they had oil issues to the cams. Honda admitted some years later that some of those bad cams were cause by the oil tubes going to them were semi block on some when they were brazed together. If you find one running now I doubt it would have bad cams if it was maintained reasonably well in it's life. They also replaced the oil orifice banjo bolt at the case with a larger hole one. I think only the 83 and before V4's needed that. Cam chain tensioners are a weak link too on the "F"'s. Those are still available and not hard to replace. One other thing I've heard is check 2nd gear. The V65 Magna's had problems with them breaking. Not sure about the F & R's. Same trans and no parts available except used.

I've only ridden one VF1000F once. It had plenty of power. The handling was a little less than the 750F that I remember. I didn't get to ride it much so I'm no expert about the handling. I've always wanted one though. Thought the "R"'s were great looking bikes and that the "F"'s would make a great one up sport touring machine for long distance and twisty roads.

With your skills, go for it. Nice Porsche. I worked the first 2 24hr of Nelson car races years back from the officials side.

Looks like I found the bike!
84 1000 with 65k-km on the clock (had the chains, guides and tensioner replaced recently), looks to be in very good shape, and comes with a complete parts bike for $2000!

Parts bike cranks over but sounds like no spark or fuel. Was told the current owner bought it from the last owner who had let it sit for the better part of a decade so likely just needs a carb rebuild, sync, tune up and fluids changed to get it running. It's got some bumps and bruises but would serve as a good platform for a naked bike project I want to do! Just a matter of getting the runner, which is eligable for collector plates, to the dealer for an inspection and history check.

    Yay!

Dealers will find all sorts of stuff wrong and charge you for a Carfax too.

That's the idea. All the stuff they find wrong can be used as a bargaining chip against the owner to get the price down.

And we don't really use carfax up here, have other systems which a smart buyer uses and pays for anyways. :D

True, and the dealers make up shit too.

The trick with a CarFax is to get the seller to pop for one or make a deal that if the vehicle is sold, the price of the CarFax (or other) is further deducted from the negotiates price. Same deal on getting a used car checked out by a Certified ASME (or other) mechanic. Commercial dealers car dealers here sometimes have a CarFax on the sales web page. IMO this is a minimum requirement even if somebody is just tire kicking.

Smart sellers will have a CarFax or other as a sales tool. If a seller (as they will) starts with some BS as to why this can't be done, do a 180. There are cars out there that have had as many as nine or ten owners in fifteen years.

All the CarFax poop is on thier website.

    Joe,
Collectors plate eligable vehicles are either 25years old or more and in good condition (or 15year old with less than 1500units produced world wide) and in oem state: not modified except for select period correct tweaks.
Basically if you have a nice classic/limited production bike or car you get a special insurance rate class.
The bike or car can only be used for "pleasure use" and not to be driven to work or school BUT comes with a substantial discount in premiums.
As an example, this bike will cost me about $75/month for insurance with standard plates.
With collectors plates I'm looking closer to $15-25/month for the same coverage!

I think you are allowed 6days/month for driving to/from work/school and you are REQUIRED to have a primary vehicle to be eligible to even apply.

Is this pan Canada or just in your province. Here the "rules" vary from state to state. There are loopholes too. In Washington one can ride an "antique" bike and not wear a helmet.

Might be that any clothes are optional for all I know. Might be a little nippy sometimes though.

    Badbilly,
I know what you are talking about but here in Canada and specifically BC, carfax is not exactly the most accurate service for a history search. We have a similar but different system up here.
And I'm well aware dealers can make stuff up, but up here, those dealers are well known and chronicled online for doing so.
I've been buying and selling cars up here for a long time and know my way around our system, but thanks for the heads up and if I venture south for a purchase your info will be noted! :)

This sounds very cool...Canada wide too?

My insurer (Meloche-Monnex) is charging me only $13 a year less, for a 26 year old VF1000R than for my ZX-14! ($ 370 per annum all perils on the ZX-14 ...good value in my opinion, but no such coverage on the VF which is public liability only :( (190 hp wheelie rocket vs a lovely though relatively anemic old gal).

When I called them to arrange the change, they indicated that they had no way of pricing fire & theft coverage on something so old so required
that I have a certified, professional appraisal done ($ 140...and yet to get the papers but the fellow that looked at it said he'd imagine it'd come in between $ 5,000 & $ 5,500) .

Now I'm wondering if I even needed to wory about it!
