    Hi all,

I'm curious...since Honda has updated the fueling for 2012 to deliver more torque from 2k to 4k, would it be possible to take my '10 to the local dealer and have them download the '12 mapping to my ECU? Or am I being naive and simplifying this too much? I really am not very mechanical and don't know all the ins and outs here.

I don't experience the mapping issues as bad as some other folks on the forum, probably because I'm not a commuter and once I start riding I don't stop much. As a canyon carver you're able to stay in the power band much easier and for much longer than someone who has to do a lot of stop & go riding. That said, I still wouldn't mind the slight improvement and have been waiting for Bazzaz to get their products ready for months (and months). Maybe a quicker, simpler fix is just to have the new mapping downloaded?

As a side note, I am more in love with this bike every time I ride it. I can't imagine there are many motorcycles out there that can do all the things the VFR12 can do, as wonderfully as it can do them. Personally I can't name a single one. The bike is extremely fast, incredibly smooth, the handling is so rock-steady that even the folks I ride with make mention of it when they follow me around the canyons, and it's much more comfortable with the stock saddle than any other bike I've ever ridden.

My longest day so far has been 950 miles and although that just about killed me due to a neck injury, I was feeling great at the 700 mile mark. It was the last bit that hurt me, and it wasn't my hindparts that were aching. That's unheard of for a stock saddle. Oh, and the bright setting on the headlight kicks ass at night. Amazing amazing motorcycle. I thought I would miss my VFR800 when I made the trade but the two machines are not even in the same league. I'm certainly not trying to put down the generations that came before, but my god this thing is damn near perfect. And I'm a sport rider who rides this thing like a sportbike. I have just as much fun on the VFR in the twisties as I do on my "real" sportbike (MV), so don't even try to tell me it's too big, too heavy, blah blah blah.

My only complaints so far are that Honda doesn't give us hard bags as standard on a $16k sport tourer, and those two little holes on either side of the windscreen that you can't clean. I hope they fired the putz who came up with that design lol!

Oops, sorry for rambling. I just love the bike and couldn't help but do a little gushing.

    2012 Update

Not sure about your question...but I totally agree with your thoughts on the bike. I am a former 3rd Gen owner. I have 2600 kms on my bike and am loving every ride more than the one before. Amazing stability and balance. The power delivery is insane and the finish is like nothing I have ever seen.

Thanks alexdig, we're definitely on the same page. Since no one else has responded I'm guessing that no one knows the answer. I'll call the dealer and ask them and post what they say.

I don't think the dealership has the ability to reprogram the ecu not like car dealerships can. That's why motorcycles use an add on computer such as a power comander where as cars use a programer that doesn't have to be left pluged in. I think you would have to see if the connectors are the same between the two years and swap ecu's or use a power commander or similar.

I agree with MrSleep,it was always my understanding that the fuel mapping is burned into the stock ECU and cannot be altered. That's the reason why you install either a Power Commander or some other brand of add-on programmable fuel controller so that you can alter the stock fuel mapping to tune your machine for whatever performance modifications that you've made to it.

Ah, that makes sense. I was wondering about that myself. I'm sure a '12 ECU would be prohibitively expensive so waiting for the Bazzaz unit is probably the best way to go. Like I said, the power restrictions in 1st and 2nd don't really affect me as much as those who do a lot of stop and go riding but as amazing as this bike is in stock form it would be pretty cool to see what it's like unrestricted.

Well...from a guy that uses his VFR1200 to commute and to hit the twisties. I'd like to report that my bike does the "hitch and go" crap while hitting the twisties, in 2nd gear! I'm irritated about it, because I should be able to let the revs drop into the 3500 rpm range, with a 1200cc V4 and still have the thing fuel smoothly upon turning my right wrist. It's annoying in town, but not near has hairy as having it do the "hitch and go hiccup" with the bike leaned over. I'm still not sold it's all ECU. I keep wondering if there is some sort of lag going on with the fly by wire throttle thingy jigger under there. Oh well....I like everything else about it.

I've never had a bike that does what this one does. GSXR, CBR, CB and ZX! Carbs or fuel injection. I've never had to think about putting exhaust on just to make a bike run right on the street. Now track bikes...well that's different.

I put a call into my dealer about the update on my VFR1200 that has happened over in Europe already.

Captain (Un)Happy, from your description I'd say you need to ride the bike differently than you were riding your other bikes and adapt to the VFR's power band. 3500 RPM and below is definitely a bad place to be if you want super quick acceleration. Maybe run a gear lower than you're used to? I know that's sometimes not possible because 2nd gear is so long that you can stay in that gear for quite some time if you're running through the tighter stuff, and it's not ideal to drop down to 1st. But if you're in 3rd and your revs are low just try running in 2nd instead. This bike loves 2nd and 3rd in the twisties. 4th through 6th are purely optional on the VFR.

I have it happen to me too and I'm in both commute and twisty rider. The bike is fine if and i should be able to torque it around 3500 in a turn then It's as if if moved my hand on the throttle and I haven't and it clips the throttle for a split second then applies power that Hitch hiccups then it just goes in the mean time I'm thrown out of my line. Not a smooth progressive power line to have when leaned over and it upsets and causes drifting off the intended line. I have been able to ride every other bike in a 3500 rpm band and that is usually the entry RPM that I use when turning in to a corner. It's worse in the leaned over but the bike will do it straight up and down too just way less problematic.

Unlike those boys across the pond American Honda has not put out a new flash for the ECU on the bike. And I don't think I should have to buy an aftermarket to fix a problem.

Sorry guys but I don't agree. I think you're trying to ride the VFR like other bikes that you've gotten used to and you're not riding it the way it wants to be ridden. Due to the stock mapping 3500 rpm is too low to get strong, smooth power. Bring your revs up and I think you'll find you have a totally different bike. Every bike has its own personality and you don't seem to be playing to the VFR's particular power traits. One of the things I really love about this bike is how smooth and powerful it is. It amazes me on every single ride. Don't be afraid to rev it a little higher. If you're truly riding aggressively, then ride the damn thing like you mean it! This is one of the healthiest motors I've ever experienced.

Anyway, this discussion is way off the mark from my original question so I'll step out at this point. Get out there and have fun dammit! :)

Its the map in stock form with the clipped 2 clipped gears. The 2012 map should be able to flash to the 2010. They are not single burn chips anymore Honda could change it if they want too. It happens even in 3-6 gear you will feel it the bike seems to wander if you cruising in the 2-4 k range. I know because I commute 3 days a week on the bike its worse in the two restricted gears but hiccups in all the gears.

I'm riding this VFR just like I rode the gen 6. Even if i push it back a gear in first I run out of gear RPM right during the apex of the turn and would have to shift that is no good. Second gear I loved the V-tech come on and had no problems with that power delivery. Even with the V tech that some complained about I found no major drops in corner problems were I would enter with a 3500-4k rpm and have the Vtech kick right at apex or just before and never a problem.

Just want a better flash for throttling and if improves fuel econ that is added bonus but I doubt it will do anything for that.

    I want a 2012 map.

Car maps are the same way just most don't want to pay for the honda source coding. So most do add on CPU/ units.

Pertaining to the prom its flashed on its like a computer bios. So yeah it can be flashed if you have the right program.Another thing if the bike could not be flashed why are they getting new flashs over the pond? So yeah it can programed by mother HONDA. Unless its not from the same generational ECU I wouldn't see a problem.

Agreed! Though, I am speaking of 1st and 2nd gear only. You can lug the vfr1200 down really low in 3rd and the thing will accellerate nice and smooth. All be it slowly accellerate. lol

When I have the bike leaned over in 2nd and it's running in the 3500-4000 rpm range the throttle just feels....grabby or "hitchy" or something that's just odd as hell. I've never experienced it on any other bike. Of course, now that I have 8000 miles on the thing, I've learned to "ride around" the problem. What happens is because I've gotten used to it, now and then it does it's hitchy-witchy deal and catches you off guard...and not always in a very comforting way. Lol

I love everything about this bike, the comfort, the power, the brakes. Of course, I bought the first one my dealer coud get its hands on too. No bike is ever perfect. But it's just odd for me to have a honda that doesn't feel smooth everywhere in the rev counter, ya know?

The "hitch and go" that Captain Happy describes is nothing new and is a carry over from the 6th Gen. It is there and on the 6th Gen, you will hit it at some point, no matter what you do. I'd be willing to bet that the 1200 is no different. You need a power commander to fix it.

Now the question I have is - why can't Honda deliver a stock FI bike without this trait? Is it because they can't meet emissions if they do? My 25 year old carbureted bikes run way smoother!!!

Is there any NEW news on the BAZZAZ system? Is it just for fuel mapping, and will it have the quickshift feature? I know thats alot of questions, but, thanks for any info.

Here in the UK we've already had one map update that has, according to most, made a big difference to the 2-4k dip.

I can't comment as my bike was updated when I picked it up new.

I've also read on a forum that the ECU has the capacity to be upgraded just the once. I can't really see that.

Hello all, new to the forum, soon to be owner, have read on vfrd that honda didn't have traction control ready so the first & second gear mapping was a quick fix to prevent wheel spin. and they are offering a remap in EU. hopefully here too!!
