Sorry for not updating. Something was definitely wrong with the other motor as well unfortunately. I exhausted all my efforts and energy into that bike but it just wasn't meant to be. We found my brother a really nice sv650 and got rid of the 500. One of the saddest disappointing things I have ever encountered not being able to get it running after all that time put into it. It's been an awesome year enjoying riding with my brother and showing him the ropes though, so not a total loss at all. He's found a passion he didn't know existed just as I had 3 years ago. Our father also ended up getting a motorcycle after not riding for 20 years. He bought a brand new Yamaha Stratoliner S. Thanks for all the help, tips, knowledge guys, I wish it could have turned out differently. Ride on, ride safe, take care.

Bummer! Glad to hear this had a positive outcome though.

If I could ask, what was the fate of the 500?

I'm kinda curious how you decided to get a VF500F for such a young person to begin with? I purchased mine so as to relive my youth as I had one in high school to ride, back when they were new. I'd wouldn't expect much if any excitement from the under 30 crowd over a classic Interceptor, even the best looking series ever made, the VF500F. :)

    Don't worry it didn't get scrapped ;)

A hobbyist motorcycle mechanic ended up taking it home. I wish I would have kept his number, I would love to know if he got it running and what it took.

I kept the first motor to keep me occupied this winter. Gonna split the cases and have a gander while hopefully teaching myself a few things along the way. If anyone needs and parts off of it let me know, pay the shipping and it's yours.

Honestly it was the engine size, weight, and price that made me go after it initially because I wanted my brother to start off on something nimble and mild mannered. When I went to look at it I loved the way it looked, very cool looking bike. I've always had a special place in my heart for the older Honda Nighthawks and CB supersports and to me, this bike shared some of the characteristics. I know what you mean though. It's great to relive memories that had a profound impact on your life. For me, I videotape and take pictures of all my rides with my friends and family so we can enjoy them over and over. I hope someday down the road I have the opportunity to repurchase some of the toys I have grown up with.

nothing wrong with younger people enjoying older bikes ;D
its kinda how it is with classic cars, most people enjoy them, and for those that dont at least have a respect for them because with out them we wouldnt have what we have today.

but with the vf500f, youre probably thinking that it would be a bad starter bike for someone, not due to the displacement, but the mechanical abilities you need to keep it running.
with that i can agree and disagree with you, because as a younger person, now 18 got my vf when i was 17, i know how frustrating it is to see your bike just sitting in the garage waiting to be ridden but cant due to some mechanical issue and know you cant fix it because you dont have the ability/knowledge. and it that point, yes it would be a bad bike for a young person
but on the other end of the spectrum its a great bike because, for me at least, it has taught me so much about bikes, the mechanics of them, and how to work on them.

yes the bikes a money pit and yes i threw plenty of money into that pit, but it was honestly all worth it due to the sheer fun-factor of the bike.
