I have read about the rc 51 and sen it in a few ads for the bike where they claim to have removed the gear driven cams sound dampners. I was just wondering if my 98 vfr would have them as well? Because if it did I would love to hear that gear whine just a little bit louder. Thanks

First I've ever heard of this. I thought they were pretty loud myself.

Are you referring to the spring loaded split gear?

I'm not sure what it would be. I just have seen it a few times now in ads for the rc 51 where they claim they have removed some type of sound dampner in the gear drive for the cams. I will do some more research on it but just thought I would see if anyone here has heard of it. Seems as though when I had my 86 vfr I could hear them much better than now on my 98. Both had and have stock exhaust. Maybe it varies from bike to bike and model to model as to how much noise they make ?

Toe cutter had it. There are some other gears inside there that some of the track day or racers will remove for that little extra power. I would assume it balances the gears out by having them in there reducing vibration and noise. They went on to say that after removing them it sounds more like a ducati with a dry clutch. Definitely something I don't want to mess with.

I have seen a couple that have had the spring loaded portion of the cam fail and it was not a pleasant noise, all four cams would be a terrible ruckus.

If I remember correctly (and there is no guaranty of that), the biggest reason for the dampeners is for reliability, as in eliminating some of the damaging harmonics (pretty much what taylor65 said).

Trust me, it will tick like a Gen 1 with a flat cam.

Are you inferring that gear teeth smacking themselves silly on a regular basis is bad???

I've never seen the insides of the earlier gear driven cams, Toe. How sloppy are they with the dampeners removed?
