    1) Can I use gear driven timing set from the 2nd gen on a first gen, or is it a better idea to just get a 2nd gen engine?
    2) Anyone convert old mechanical speedo bikes to electric speedos?
    3) Any permenant way to solve cam tension issues?

Let me know of any info you can provide.

All I can provide is that I want nothing to do with a public enema. Or private, for that matter.

I'm sure someone on here will be able to give you the answers you seek. Good luck!

Ok..first off, ever hear the phrase "if it aint broke dont fix it"?? Not all 1st Gen VFs were bad..there are plenty still on the street with hi milage and they've never been touched..if you do have a problem you can find all the parts you need..look, they are not hard to work on if you have any skills at all..the carbs are very easy just intimidating until you do your first set and after you go "really"..if your wiring harness is bad buy another..it takes no time to swap it out..tensioners and chains go bad in lots and lots of different bikes..my buddies 94 cbr1000 needs new ones right now..get to work and fix what needs fixed and get out and ride..if the motor blows up theres plenty of them around to replace it..a lot of guys on here will bash the 1st Gen but hey i love the 2 i have and i also love the 3 2nd Gens i have..trust me coming from a guy thats always digging for old bikes..you will have no problems finding what you need if you take the time to look..good luck with your project and have fun..do what you wanna do

Well, the main reason I asked about the tensioners is most of the people on here talk about them like they were cast in hell, and delivered to honda by the devil himself. I really don't know about the condition of my engine, since it seems like the starter is unresponsive, even when pumping 12v straight to it. It's not a locked up engine though, since it turns over in gear with the plugs out.

The reason I asked about speedos, cosmetically, the only things usable are the tail, the frame, and the tank with lots of bondo, so I planned to "cafe fighter" it. With that whole thing, I planned to do a smaller, all electric gauge cluster, with a dual round light setup likely, and other customizations. I realize defairing a vf on this forum is frowned upon, but I can't afford to take it back to stock, and it would not be road legal now.

I had planned to rebuild my own starter, I'm just working on getting it off the bike now, top bolt broke off in the case. And the I love both streetfighters and cafe racers so I planned do take elements from both, I want to start a build post here soon.

Iam looking for the same info but for different reasons. Looking at building a vintage racer based on a vf750f and would like to know if the cam gear drives will work in the first gen. The race org requires pre 86 frame and block but allows updates in forks, brakes, wheels and allso allows superbike build on the motors.
