The switch from the 360 to 180 degree crank was done for the same reason the new R1's have done the same thing. More controllable torque curve. This video made by yamaha is the best description of the uneven firing interval that gives the later VFR's and the new R1's the rumble.

That RC166 is bad. I had chills when they had it running around the track, and when they fired it up and made the audience jump, I got all giddy.

Boy would I love to hear one live...

 

I feel like I've read why in some old scanned article hidden somewhere in the old corners of the internet. Screw advertising homework, I'm going to find out.

 

I love them both very, very much, but there is something special to me about my dead 360° crank VF500. Maybe it was the way it burbled at idle, or the flat drone it bellowed down country roads like it wasn't really working all that hard. I do really love the way my 94 sounds, don't get me wrong, because it is amazing as well

That is very cool. The RC 166, R1 and Triumph triple shown being ridden really rocks!

The sound quality on the ones just being revved at standstill didn't do those examples any justice, especially the Ducati twin.

 

Saw a Triumph 675 go past where I was working almost every day earlier this year that sounded pretty good.

 

Trust me when I say, with my Arrow exhaust, with the db killer out, Emma sings like you can't believe!

Ditto to that. Saw a youtube video of Kenny Roberts take a restored TZ750 yamaha out for a lap on the Indianapolis mile commemorating when he debuted the bike for the first time in 1975, the 2 stroke triple engine sounded like a caged animal. I've got an older brother with an H2 750 Kaw with Bill Wirges expansion chambers on it that sounds sweet too. I like the sound of any motor that's putting out serious HP.

 

for the record, the TZ750 is an inline 4, not a triple. The most common triple two-strokes are the Kawasakis - 500 and 750 in the states.

 

+1... Had an H-1 years ago with intake & exhaust done, great sound!
Not the stereotypical 'ring-ding' at all... when throttled it started with a low menacing growl which became an angry wail when it came on the pipe.

Thanks for the input, I had no clue the TZ750 was an inline 4 2 stroke, I just assumed it was a triple. I even looked it up because I thought you were nuts but nope, you were right.

 

Agreed, the newer Cross-Plane R-1 really has my aural attention...seriously. That and the K 1600 GT...

 

Always liked the NC24 180 crank motor versus the NC30 360. I understand a 180 puts torque to the road better? Like a Ducati L motor does.

Actually the 360 crank was used in the race engines and gave better torque characteristics. There is a significantly longer pause in the 360 crank that allowed the tire to recover. The 180 motors have a much better sound dubbed the screamer. The 360 has a much more mellow sound dubbed the droner. At least that's the way it told here:

Anyone heard a suzuki Madura 1200?

Rare bike, only made in 85 and 86. Suzuki Madura GV1200 V4. Stock exhaust growls like a wild cat. Turns heads big time. What a great sounding high rev engine, and they are bullet proof too!
