I have a 99, and want to replace the stock exhaust with a slip on. I would like the deepest v8'ish sounding can I can get. Any suggestions?

Check out this website. It has comparisons for aftermarket VFR exhausts from Two Brothers, Staintune and Micron. There are sound clips of each kind of exhaust.

IMHO, I think the Staintunes have the best throaty sound compared to the other two. Micron tends to be louder, but not neccesarily throaty.

Hmmm... Here's my take from hearing them in person.

Staintune - loud and raspy but also has a low tone to it.

Micron - loud but mostly in low tones, it doesn't have much of the high frequency stuff

2Bros - what I have on our 98. Loud and just a little more of the high frequency stuff than the Micron.

The 2bros has done nothing but get louder with more miles. It really needs repacking. Staintunes never need repacking. Microns are built with ease of repacking in mind. I think if I ever get just a slip on for my 01 VFR, I will go for the Micron. But for just the sheer visceral appeal of the sound of the VFR on full throttle, I like the staintunes. I don't think my neighbors would be so appreciative though. ;)

    Adios,

I've never seen anyone else mention Devil pipe. I have a Devil pipe on my '01 and it sounds great. Throatier that a 2B but not necessarily louder. Anyone else using a Devil pipe?

I ended up getting the high mount micron.

    it sounds GREAT!

for anyone else looking, I did quite a bit of research and simply liked the micron sound best and I could get it in the black aluminum that I wanted. I thought the two bros was similar but not quite as deep. As for getting the high mount, easy to install and got to keep the passenger foot pegs. By the way the aluminum can doesn't seem to get hot at all.

thanks for input from everyone else.

I would not recommend making a decisionon pipes for a V-tech judging by the reviews at
    http://www.is2k.com/autozone/exhaust_2bros.htm
It sure seems to me that it is completely biast towards Staintune which I have a set of and which that nice chrome feeder pipe they talk about is no longer so beautiful. As for the sound to me it's just too quiet at higher revs you can't even hear the exhaust (from on the bikeanyhow) all you hear is the engine. I havent hade anyone else ride it so i am not sure what a drive by would sound like. All I'm saying is dont believe everything you read. I am not happy with the Staintunes

    Sound Bites

Sound is such a subjective thing. I have the Two Bros Stash ( Nickle Plated Carbon Fibre ) and love the sound, the appearance and the extra storage...I can put a bottle of wine in that sucker!~

Staintune plain and simple.. not sure what the other fellows problem is? I've heard em have one but for the 6th gen I can't answer, thats a whole nother system honda has going on. But your 99 is more like my 97 so I'd say go with the staintune, great sound, fit and finish like OEM and better. as

My vote goes to Scorpion. I used to have a TBR Titanium on my 2000 but after watching it basically fall apart, I sold that POS and installed the Scorpion. I originally wanted a Staintune but I was able to get the CF Scorpion for almost $200 less than a Staintune. If I purchased a SS Scorpion, it would have been almost $300 less. Comparing the Scorpion to TBR, there is absolutely no comparison. The Scorpion is a far and away superior product. I bought the TBR on the internet (Star Cycle) because my Honda dealer told me they couldn't match the price and Star Cycle was a top notch company. I would have to agree, I have since purchased 3 more exhausts from them.

The TBR didn't fit, not even close. The band around the muffler was too big. One of the POS springs that attaches the pipe to the muffler had no rubber cover on it. The band clamp to hold the pipe to the collector was missing entirely. I called TBR and they told me since I purchased it from the internet, they would not honor the warranty. I told them that Star Cycle "Drop Ships" direct from the vendors, meaning it was shipping directly from TBR, and they hung up on me. The fact they refused to honor their own warranty was enough for me not to recommend TBR to anyone. I surely will NEVER use their products ever again.

A trip to the local hardware store got me back in business and it took 2 freaking hours of filing away at the right passenger foot peg to get the POS to fit without rubbing.
The run down of problems I encountered with the POS TBR pipe:
    1. Intermediate pipe wouldn't seal.
    2. Can had up to 2" of side to side play when installed.
    3. The band clamp around the muffler was too big allowing the muffler to rub on the passenger peg.
    4. The rubber on the POS springs rotted out in less than one year.
    5. After a few washes, the end caps on the muffler started to corroded. No amount of polishing could save them. (This is why NO ONE should use aluminum for an exhaust application)
    6. Muffler leaked at both ends.

In contrast, the Scoprion has been a model of quality. It has a spacer to locate the pipe off the peg. It has SS end caps. The Carbon Fiber is surely not as durable as Titanium but I think it looks better. It uses marine grade SS clamps at both the collector and the muffler. The intermediate pipe has a much thicker wall than the TBR.

TBR can kiss my ass and to address the original issue of this thread:

The TBR sounded OK. Maybe a little raspy on the top end. I definitely think it sounded better at lower RPM's.

The Scorpion has a smooth even note from the bottom all the way to red line. I would compare the sound to a V8 car. Not a Camaro, but maybe a foreign V8. Sounds good I think.

    KC-10 FE out...

I've had a 2Bros full stainless C2 on my '91 for 9 years now. I did have to repack it last year - and it was somewhat of a bitch.
But it has been a flawlessly outstanding system - and the sound speaks for itself. I've got a video clip up at
    http://home.comcast.net/~safosters/91yellowveefer_vidclip1.wmv

It's in the photo gallery as well - but that's been busted for a few weeks now.
She was a bit cold when I shot this, but you get the picture....

I love my D&D they are a little cheaper than the Micron, but they are definately louder and deeper sounding...

    Just my 2 cents...
