Guitar strings keep me busy for hours. Did I mention that cupcakes are my favorite?

Here I thought that I found just the answer. Then discovered I paid 2 times what they list for on line but still about 1/5th the cost of the Honda clips. Then only to find out that they had been discovered already and posted up by Metalican on the second post here. But none the less, this thread was amusing.. The "Bolt" clips are by far, easier to use than the original Honda clips. I don't care how well you think you can operate them. I mean what can be easier than pushing a button when inserting, and when preparing for re-use. And I know how to use them too. Just say'n.

With a little practice, a DIYer should be able to get the clips in and out several times before wearing one out and/or breaking it.
+1 to being able to change the oil without removing the clips. However, I have been unsuccessful changing the filter without removing a few...

I've taken the stainless screw/rubber well nut combination loose many dozens of times on all my bikes as I'm permanently tweaking and upgrading them and they still work exactly the same, forget those stupid fragile plastic clips.

If that takes longer, you are better at those fasteners than I am. When they are new, and working well, they are quick and easy and quicker than a screw would be. After they have been on for a while and exposed to heat and coolind cycles, covered in dirt and oil, pulled and pushed as the bike goes down the road and you have 5 or 6 of them to undo; I think the screw and well nut idea is far superior in every way.

You gotta use a filter with a nut on the end and tweak the front plastic mud guard piece thingie pretty far to accomplish it, but it does work.......I imagine if you had small enough hands (girl hands at largest) and the pipes aren't hot, you could stuff a filter wrench in there, but it aint likely.

If you have to force your fairings in any manner to change the oil, then you run the risk of cracks and breakage there. Mine evenually broke off at the very narrow spot on the lower left just behind the side stand pivot. I think that is what the dealership was doing but of course, I can't prove that without going to battle and I am not interested. I would rather pay for clips than to pay for fairings. But I never thought of shanging the clips over to stainless screwws. A thought to consider when I get back home.

I'd love to help but I'm only a trolll. The person who really knows it all is Mrtellitcantfu2. (Sorry if I messed with the spelling, sir) I'm sure he'll be along shortty....whoops thats shortly. lol Just kidding.....
But serioulsy...these little guys get a lot of folks out of sorts. Especially the short fused guys. I'll make an attempt to help but please dont get all pissy and call me names or make rude comment about my..... I can't handle the truth...... I think that one of the problems with working with the clips is that it seems so unusual to push "in" on the centre of the clip on order to "pull" the whole clip out. If you try to work on one that is easily accessible it would be best. Or better yet "play" with one which is already out. (and still in one piece if you have been having trouble) Use of a small screw driver to push in on the centre pin is often employed but I like to use something which has less chance of marring or slippng off the surface. Something of smaller diameter than the centre pin. Plastic or wood is great, but what ever you have in the tool box will work.... Here is the part which seems hard to get your head around or is for me. But I am easily confused. You have to "push" in on the centre pin to allow the surrounding "cage" of the body of the clip to reduce in diameter in order to pull the entire clip out. The tiny "wings" on each side of the pin portion of the clip will spread (just like in Snowbird) when the pin is pushed in. This can be observed best when you have one out. Now the pin can almost fall out. But.....you are pushing "in" on the pin. Therein seems to lie the dilemma and often frustration. While still holding the centre pin in to allow the "cage" to compress, you have to summon up all your dexterity to grasp the head of the clip and pull it out. I know, hold the pin "in" and pull the whole cip "out". Doesn't even sound right does it.. Try it a few times and you too will tame this little creature. Surely not worth busting your balls about....or mine. Good luck with these. If you want PM me and I'll try to take some pics and help you out if you are still having problems.
This thread also provides many alternatives you might want to employ. One says don't remove them. Change the oil with the fairings in place. If you want a safe ride it is best if you remove the bodywork often in order to inspect those parts of the bike which need to viewed regularly to ensure safe operation. A thorough inspection of your bike with the body work removed can save your wallet and maybe your life.
