So my carbs from my 1984 vf500 had a broken needle in one of its low speed (i think) passages, So I just bought a set from a 1986, wich I know are smaller with some differant plumbing, besides the new intake boots, what are going to be my obstacles? Is the 84 petcock ok, it has a vacume line, does the 1986 operate the same way? It would have been nice to save the 84 but we are past that now and I am just looking for some pointers for the 86.
    Thanks

    different length throttle cables

It may work, but the throttle cables run to the center of the front bank on the 84, and to a pulley on the end of the #2 carb on the 86, so there may be a need to swap the cables with the carbs. Also have to look at the "choke" cable.

Not sure if the 86 airbox will fit under the 84 fuel tank, so might need to investigate that also. Someone on here has probably done this before and wrote about it, try a search of the 1st-2nd gen forum. Good luck, let us know how it goes...

Usually this goes the other way round, switching out the 30mm '86 carburetors for the earlier 32mm '84 and '85s.

I would consider rebuilding or sourcing an '84 set as these have larger main jets and with this different jet needles, emulsion tubes and a different float height spec.

If rebuilding your '84 carbs, check to see if the fuel bowls have been externally vented (this was a FSB back in the day).

Modified '84s on the left (externally vented) compared to stock, on the right:

FSB (this notes replacing the jets, et al., but you can keep all of this as is)

People who insist upon riding VF500s need to be very thankful for Invisible and Tinki for helping to TRY to solve their problems.

...a bit of a left handed compliment. No disrespect to you squirrelman but I don't get your 'glass is half empty perspective' when it comes to the 500.
