Supension setup help

    I have a '99 5th gen with stock suspension, I bought it 2nd hand and don't like the way its suspension is setup right now. How can I reset all the settings back to factory defaults, or some recommendations on how i should set it up? I personally like my suspension soft, but still able to corner smoothly.

    I believe the factory setting for the rear shock is 2 (2nd lowest) notch, and 1/2 turn out on preload. Front is 2-1/2 groves showing.

    Its in the owners manual if you've got it. I think Y2K has it right except I remember the preload being 3/4 to 1 turn out. How much do you weigh? an overly soft suspension will have an uncomfortable ride over one sprung correctly.

    For a detailed tutorial get the "twist of the wrist II" DVD. Second section is all SAG adjustment..

    I don't work for Keith code (in case you were wondering)..

    According to the manual std settings (98-01 vfr800)

    9mm from top surface of fork cap - front pre-load (have read 2 rings showing on web)

    2nd groove - rear pre-load

    1.5 turn from full hard - rebound damping (I have read 1.25 on web)

    Front 3 Lines showing

    Rear 3 Notch
    Rear Preload Damping 1.25 to 1.5 back from fully Clockwise.

    But best to set Rider Sag ( WEB has lots of help )

    I have also fitted a 929 shock on my VFR800i 1998. Which gives Compression Damping as well.

    Also replaced Fork oil with Motul 7.5w (Stock Springs & Oil Stock Height) (35k miles)

    Something to keep in mind is that the factory standard settings are probably not going to be any better than what you have now. As others have suggested above, you really need to try and set your rider sag. I say "try" because I think you'll see right away that you will never be able to get anywhere close to a good setup with the stock parts. You don't mention your weight but my guess is that you will have the preload adjustments cranked all of the way down. You did note that you like a soft ride (I interpret that as being a plush ride). That's where the VFR's stock valving falls short the most - it is very harsh. You won't get a plush ride with the stock valving parts no matter what you do. Heavier fluid just makes things worse and lighter fluid isn't a solution either.

    Fiddle around with the settings until you can find a configuration that suits you best. Don't be surprised if you still have some problem areas, the best you can hope for is something that works ok for most of the riding you do. Good luck!
