pilot jet screw o-ring

    Hello all, still working on my 86 vf500f but ran into a snag. I went through my carbs as the bike had set for awile before i bought it. cleaned it out really good, put it back together, but all my pilot jet screw leak. Turns out that what i thought was a flat rubber gasket is actually a really old o-ring. I have one new one as I needed the intake side gasket, but at $40 per gasket for the kit and the only part i need is that tiny o-ring, i was hoping to be able to buy them somewhere for less. All the hardware stores in the area and auto stores have been checked, I can find one with thr right inner diameter, but the material is thicker than on the o-ring that i need. could I user an o-ring with that is thicker? or will that throw off my settings? would anyone know where to get o-rings the right size without ordering the whole kit for each carb? I have found the front gauges, fairing stay, headlight, and modified an 84 interceptor fairing to fit my bike, next step is to see how well she runs (had it running before the rebuild had to keep it choked and use starting fluid to get her going....should run much nicer now. After this step if all goes well i can clean the rust out of the tank and take her for a test ride...

    you won't find that o-ring at ANY hardware store, unfortunately

    a company called K & L Supply will likely be able to sell you kits with screw, spring, washer, and 0-ring for far less than your Honda stealer......

    'if u had rust in the tank use an additional fuel filter in the line to carbs

    You can find the o-ring for the pilot jet at Napa Auto Parts. The part number is 272-2006. They cost about $.88 a piece.

    Do you have a better part #? I searched for that number on the napa website and came up with nothing....

    I bought those from NAPA a couple of years ago. If they are the same ones they are just a little thicker o-ring compared to the original. They do work though. You will have to adjust your needles a little different. Not sure if the needle will actually close all the way because of the thicker o-ring. So the pilot adjustment may be like 1/4 or1/2 turn out less as what the books state. Or around there.

    This is probably a little late for masonv45 but may help future information searchers.

    The correct NAPA part# for the Pilot Screw O-ring is 727-2600. This is the small one that goes on after the spring and washer. My pilot screws also have a bigger o-ring close to the screw driver slot end that appears to be reusable as it is not compressed axially like the small one. The smaller one has an inside diameter of 3 mm and a thickness of 1 mm (5 mm OD) and cost 49 cents each as of 08/25/17 at my local Southern California store. These fit perfect on my 1987 VFR700FII. These may not show up on a NAPA website search as they are from a generic NAPA O-ring assortment. Go to the NAPA store and ask to see their metric O-rings. They have a plastic box of them. Other auto parts stores may also carry the same box.

    NAPA also has an SAE O-ring size that is close to the correct metric one but I think it would be too big. It is 1/8" inside diameter and 1/16" thick (1/4" OD). These may be what GreyVF750F was using when he couldn't bottom his screws, a needless uncertainty. The SAE part # is 727-2006. This part number is close to the correct metric part number above so don't get them confused.

    I don't think you want to alter the pilot screw setting based on the o-ring size because the critical factor is the distance the end of the pilot screw is from the fully closed position. If you feel that you cannot achieve a fully closed screw position to calibrate your screw setting, then the O-ring is too big.
