I am searching for the specs of original shock.
My bike came with an after-market shock which is now in unrepairable condition, though I am not sure if it was the proper one.
If known, please fill in / correct the values below:

EYE TO EYE LENGTH : 346mm
    DISTANCE BETWEEN BOTTOM FORK : 40mm -- BOLT M10 X 60mm
    WIDTH OF TOP MOUNT : 40mm -- BOLT M10 X 60mm
STROKE : ??? (I measure just 35mm from stopping rubber)
    SPRING RATE : ???
    SPRING FREE LENGTH : ???
    MAX DIAMETER : ???

Is there a close match alternative that doesn't need modifications other than a different spring?

    Thanks for any replies.

If I was in US I would consider the modification option but for me it is not feasible.
I have already read all valuable info provided at above site (also the VF500 shock how to) and wish to thank the author for sharing.

I would consider asking Jamie for the technical details so you could have someone in your country do the work...

I am considering fitting a VTR100SP (SC45) shock. Any thoughts about that?

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know if the VTR 1000 shock has compression dampening adjustments?Or just preload and rebound adjustments. I know you can get different parts for Penske, but the whole idea of using the VF 500 was to not spend a fortune and make a fun bike for the track. Dan

True but finding a nice used high end race shock to modify won't cost too much more than modifying an OE part, F2/F3/F4i/VTR etc., and it will be much better in all categories. Jamie could do the mods to one I'm sure or provide the parts.

There are lots of VTR1000 or Super Hawk shocks on eBay. Pretty simple unit though.

If that doesn't have the remote reservoir on a hose at the correct angle it will be difficult to mount.

Thanks for the info, that F4 with the mods looks like a good direction. Then maybe a F3 front end would help things out too. I'll strip everything down to the frame for starters, check over all bearings, and it would be nice to find a after market exhaust. Once I get that far I'll be searching for motor mods. There are not many miles on the bike, but it will already out. Dan

Regarding mono-shock upgrades, if I could recommend, give a call (or send an e-mail) to DMr.

Jamie Daugherty (DMr) is a great resource here and he knows a good deal about suspension modifications, for First Generation V4s.

On this note, the F4i shock conversion with remote reservoir is a great upgrade:

That looks like the ticket! I still need to get the VF 500 out of the bone yard of my buddy's shop. I need some projects finished 1st at the shop for work space. My buddy that owns the shop Has his CB1100F almost done,or his Rickman/Triumph almost done, for a lift to use.I can actully get it stripped done before I need the lift, but it would be good to get a project finished up (and cleaned up) before starting another one.
I need to move to the 17" conversion thread,(I've looked through it before) and message Jammie on that subject. Thanks Dan
