Filter was fairly easy to remove, but removing the fairing pcs and putting them back..yike. Its those little clip thingies....easy to get on and a couple were really difficult to get back in place. Took around 4 hrs to get ER done. Glad I put one of Scott's stainless reusable filters on...will be awhile before I tackle that again.
Replacing the front sprocket was an adventure as well, but was glad to find out that the tool set was the spanner needed to adjust the chain. Which was needed to get the required slack for the larger 18T front sprocket in place. Piston fell out of the hydro clutch unit and bleeding/restoring lever pressure took quite awhile as well. All is good now except I didnt realize that the speedo sensor gets input off of the front sprocket not the front wheel like many bikes. So.....when the the speedo reads 62 mph I'm actually doing 70 (4250 rpm) now. Results in a fudge factor of 1.125 when determining mph, odo and mpg etc.. Will update on how this lowering of rpms effects mpg. Engine has enough torque to pull the taller gears easily. Actually, seems happier with the taller gearing. Needs the Rotex supercharger kit next....:)

I'm looking into an upgrade in the sprocket change myself. I'd like to keep as much low end grunt as I can, while maximizing on the mpg. I do commute, but also love to play in the twisties. So I would like to know how your baby runs now with the change...

Dodge, practice removing and replacing the left side fairing will make perfect. I can remove and reinstall mine in ten minutes. Then again, We don't know what bike we're talking about here. Go into your profile and update your bike info so we all know what you ride.

Not a very aggresive rider here..but, the 18T front sprocket did lower rpms. Now a verified 4500 rpms at 70 mph. No prob getting off the line..runs great.

I went the other way just last week. I put a 16T front on my 5th gen when I replaced the chain and sprockets. I added a Speedohealer too so my speedo is pretty much dead nuts. I like the results. It sure makes it easier when riding 2up. On the interstate the revs are higher, but I don't care. The bike will never pull to redline in 6th gear anyways.

The fairings do get easier to deal with once you do it a couple of times.

Dodge, what year Viffer do you have?

Dodge let us know about the mileage you get now, and how it gos in the twisties. The first week I had my 2002 I took both sides and the front fairing off just to see how difficult it would be, WOW those little plastic clips -- 5 bucks a piece , I had two that were a little fragile. OK SEEEEEEEEE YA

In regards to sprockets, I went minus 1 front, plus one rear. Wow, whole different bike, installed speedo healer and gps corrected. Bike was out 7% at 100 kph, then 15% after swap. Now speedo is dead on at 60 miles per hour running exactly 5000 rpm, mileage may have slightly changed but I don't see it. Just for giggles, when i rolled off the line the bike nows stands up at 7000rpm and it barely used to lift the wheel when passing 9 grand. I'm never selling my gear driving toy... ever

Ya'lls cruise rpm's seem high. My stock '09 cruises 90mph @ 6,000rpm. What is the final drive ratio on stock, around .7--something.

Ya, compared to my friends stock 03 vtec, mine is definately a gear higher. My vtr1000 had -1 +2 and I couldn't tell u the revs, but man it pulled hard, but around here our max highway speed is 55mph. If I were running lots of highways I would have replaced with stock teeth. My friends vtec was only out 5% on the speedo, mine was 7. The gearing swap changed my top gear rpm by 400.
