I am getting ready to put my motor back in the frame and wanted to do a compression test beforehand since I just did a top-end rebuild. I am trying to use a battery and remote starter switch hooked up to my starter to crank the engine. I first tried the motorcycle battery and got nothing. Thinking the battery might not have been on the charger long enough, I tried hooking up to my car battery and still got nothing. In both situations I had negative lead on the block and positive going to the starter. I thought my starter switch might be bad so I tried touching positive lead directly to starter but nothing there either. I took starter out of the engine and tried the above and still got nothing. The engine cranks manually just fine btw. I should also note the starter worked fine before I began tearing down the bike. Any thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Lucas

I'm unsure what may be wrong here, however the starter is VERY easy to find if you know they interchange with several other bikes, such as the sabre, magna, and other sizes I suspect.

I have a spare and tried the same procedures. I am trying to remember back to when I first used the remote starter switch and I don't think anything else was hooked up. The motor was entirely out of the frame..all wiring off and everything. Just the engine and the starter. Could an improper ground prevent it from working?

I would suspect yes. an easy test, 12v direct from battery to starter, both ground and positve, if starter spins, your starter is fine, but something is shorted.

Tried touching both positive and negative leads to starter terminal at the same time. Got nothing but sparks, no spinning of the starter motor at all for either starter...

So, took the starter apart and did continuity tests outlined in the manual. No resistance measured between starter terminal and starter case which apparently means I need to replace the whole unit. Any ideas on how the starter could have gone bad after working just months ago??

Anyone know if the starter of a vf500 will fit my vf700f? Not sure which part number to go off of. The sticker on the starter says MB2 8216 but the various fiches all differ...
