Have you already installed a VFRness on it or made your own? It really does make a huuuuge difference, especially at idle.

I made my own using 10 gauge wire:
1.) ran a new ground from the regulator to the frame,
2.) new fused connection from the regulator to the positive terminal,
3.) and new fused / relayed wire up to the front for the radiator fan

Now I'm sitting about 12.5 - 13.0 V at idle when the temp gauge is as far up as I want to see it with lights & radiator fan on. When the bike is cooler, I'm sitting about 14.0 V at idle and 14.0 - 14.2 V anything above idle. I also have a computer fan mounted on the regulator to keep it cool(er) and an HID headlight to draw less power / light up the road better.

A permanently mounted voltmeter is an excellent investment on these bikes, especially since we know the charging system is weak to begin with.

x2. I also ran a 8 gauge wire for a ground from the battery to the frame and ran heavier wire from the stator to the R/R. No problems in the last 6000 miles.

this thread was not started to say I have a charging problem.

    To summarize my posts;

I've had every charging problem known to the VFR
    I carry a charging meter
a lady not paying attention in stop and go traffic locked up the brakes trying to avoid rearending me
bike idled too long with too many things drawing on the system and the battery died
pushed it up hill to get to a point where I could bump start it
started and charged fine from there on
The ride wasn't as enjoyable as I'd expected when I left the house
    that is all

You just gotta love all of the super-helpful-yet-incessantly-smartassed vfr folks. Sounds like this thread made that ride even less enjoyable.

you have to throw stones here... you know that.. it is self defense, cause if you don't you get swallowed up into the black hole,

at least you were able to start yours and ride home... I had to go buy new fuses and light bulbs .... I shorted every fuse and every bulb except the high beam and the turn signals..(every thing that was lit up when the back feed happened blew out) pissed me off I was almost 2 hours late for a meeting. and I didn't figure out the lights were burned out till I was almost home and I couldn't see the speedometer or tach....

Im still confused, did the ride make it completely into the suck category, or are we still talking "non-enjoyable"?

Nothing broken, to include the charging system, and no one hurt so it remains in the "non-enjoyable"

If you are stuck in traffic why would you have your brights on? I've never understood why people always want to ride with their brights on. In the safety class they told us to ride with our brights on so if a light burns out you will still have the low beam. Well that doesn't work on any sport bike I know of.

Just one of those pet peaves of mine for a long time. Really bad when a harley goes by with all three of their monster lights going.

Simply forgot that they were on bright and didn't think to turn them down. I ride during the day with brights on for visibility. Brights are far more noticeable by the cages. If I'd have turned the brights off in stop and go traffic, it would have made the difference between a dead battery and not. Can't argue with what you say you were told, but MSF courses teach to ride with brights on for visibility and not for burned out bulbs.

My concern is trying to mount one of those charging gadgets. Between the alligator clip and the probe it would have to hurt, and probaby really piss off one's SO.
