We all love our VFRs unique V4 sound and 90% of the time ( 100% touring ) it's ear plugs in but I believe I have found my VFRs sound sweet spot.

Last weekend was out on a country ride with a buddy on his K1300S and knowing after a Gas stop refill a tight mountainous twisty section was coming with an abundance of tight 10 to 15mph corners winding through rocky walled cutouts with a predetermined stop for a Pie and coffee at its end decided to keep my ear plugs out.

About half way along found myself held up behind 2 cars doing 45mph coming onto a short broken white line mid gorge straight before heading back up a tight twisiting steep incline not wanting to waste the only opportunity knocked it back 2 gears in preparation then when the thankfully empty straight appeared rolled the throttle to WOT past them.

Not only did my VFR take off like scolded cat teleporting itself past the 2 cages like nothing the sound my 5th Gen made underneath was almost stunning in its quality, it seemed the noise of the GDCs, Airbox and Carbon Arrow all sync'd at that one moment conspiring together to make the most amazing mechanical symphony possible for a mechanical thing to make as it accelerated its way to 9K.

Has anyone else found their VFRs sweet spot for sound and how ?

First off, I'm a sucker for the k1300. so nice! but such a long wheel base... Kinda like the hot chick at the bar, with strings attached!

I vote for anything above 8k on these v4s. seriously. the sound is incredible and I couldn't agree with you more

600 inline sport bikes make me WANT ear plugs. 1000's are just a lower pitch...

V4s and V twin engines are the stuff

inlines are so boring. V's are the kings. I think 5k on my 84 is beautiful. she starts sounding like a smallblock at redline around that, its pure beauty to the ear.

I4 engines just have top end power, but REALLY arent very charismatic like our V4's we so deeply love.

Got to steal a ride, didn't notice its wheel base on the road finding it handled well and ergo wise felt similar to a VFR but on steroids. With its smooth relentless thrust forward through its low to upper midrange could see no need to ever try its top end at least on public roads.... Mind even though it has a full Arkaprovic system it doesn't sound near as satisfying as my VFR but it does sound gruntier low down than his previous GSXR1000 with Yoshi.

Well spotted, was the Pie Shop near Bilpin. We'd started the ride from Sutherland to Goulburn to Oberon to Lithgow then a low trafficed run through Bells Line of road to Bilpin then back to Sutherland approx 570kms / 350miles ... Their standard mince pie was very nice indeed, I'd rate it better than the standard Robinson pie shop pies which have drifted a little the last 10 years.

among the laundry list of mods on my humble little 87 are the fact that i have removed that intake snorkel from the front of the airbox, along with drilling the 20 something holes in the airbox lid that is recommended with...oh hell, did K&N recommend that with their air filter, or did Dynojet recommend that with the stage 2 jet kit....crap i cant remember, it was one of them. either way, my airbox is absolutely swiss cheese at this point, and when you couple that with the Laser 4-2-1 baffle and the custom muffler I've had built for the bike, when i get the old girl out on the open pavement and pull the throttle to WFO, it roars like an angry lion demanding more! You can clearly hear that airbox growling with an odd, low roaring tone just inhaling as much air as it can find from under the gas tank, and as weird as it was at first, i've come to absolutely love that sound (which is sorta dangerous for me, cause now i get off on opening the throttle all the way....not so good for staying outta trouble).

as for a "sweet spot"....hell who knows, as long as that exhaust is rumbling that sweet V4 music, I dont even miss the radio in my cage.

I can't say that there is a sweet spot for the engine note in my '96. I tried this morning to find one.

Anything above 3,500 rpm is good, it starts really getting angry around 7,000 rpm. From 9k to redline it just sounds like a pure performance machine.

    I'm running a TBR slip-on, a K&N panel filter, and no snorkel.

yea, i had a vfr with a kerker 4-2-2 system once, and it sounded kinda raspy to me....sorta like D&D systems tend to sound on most bikes.

    Um... sweet spot?

It's all sweet music, isn't it?

Okay, the closer you are to the redline, the more aggressive the sound.

Hell, I love the sound of my '86 at idle. It just gets better from there.

And all inlines are not created equal. Nuthin' like the shreek of a triple at 9k!

And while we're on the subject...

What does a VFR1200 even sound like? It's not a 90-degree V, so I would think the sound would be significantly different than the 750/800 Viffers.

    Yes? No? Bueller?

every time i hear the new 1200 motor, it makes me sick cause it sounds so much to me like an I4 that im just turned off from the whole bike. somebody needs to find a really loud, really deep-toned exhaust and let that poor bike breathe and HOPEFULLY turn my opinion of this bike around.

Actually I think it sounds a bit more like a VFkF/R or V65 (with a decent exhaust). Just poked around u2b a bit and checked some of the sound bytes of 1200's with Staintune, Akropovic, et al.

Here's one of my VFkR: Quick startup video of VF1000R with Sudco exhaust on Vimeo

Still don't care for the looks of the 1200 though. :frown:
