Anyone had to replace this part?

The mechanic is saying it cost close to $890 just for the ECU.

I'm getting mixed results on the internet as far as pricing. Sounds like i'm going to have to drop a grand.

    This Blows!

Find yourself a motorcycle scrap yard, 890 sounds about right for a new one, but is a big waste of money. What happened to your current one?

Granted my bike is a 2000, but when the ECU went on it 3 years ago (3 months after I bought it from the dealer), it was an $800 part, and about an hour or so of labor.

Footnote: My dealer paid for the replacement since I had only racked up about 500 miles in those 3 months. We bash dealers all the time here, so thought it was only fair I mention an honorable act. In turn, I paid them for an hour of labor. Good faith goes both ways.

There's nothing on E Bay right now but i would keep my eyes open for one or place Want it now add and see if anything turns up. I got one for an 86 700F a couple of years ago for cheap. Just be sure there's a return policy associated with your purchase Just in case.

    Thanks for your replies!

I was heading back from a 2400 mile trip and the F-I Light came on for about an hour and then never lite up again. Then the RPM Gauge died and it was getting a little warm as I headed to the mechanic.

As it is now I owe them $145 for taking the bike apart, diagnosing and putting it back together. I don't have the cash ($1038 / Total) right now if I was to let them fix it.

I'm going to have to get it some how. Not sure if I have the patience as I have lost a month of riding season and my sanity is going out the door without no motorcycle. LOL!

Had a ride planned this weekend and now I'm going the boring route... By CAR!

    Life could be worse....

Separate question: Would you consider the VFR a high maintenance bike?

Aside from the occaisional electrical gremlins(although they are usually charging system related) the mechanical parts on these bikes are bomb proof. I've put 9000 on mine in my first year of ownership, the only issue i experienced was the rectifier regulator failing. A ricks motorsport R/R, the VFRness from wire my bike, and a cooling fan from an old desktop computer attached to the R/R(drops temp from 150F to 100F) and the only thing I've done to the bike in the last 7000 miles or so is put fresh Rotella synthetic in with a new miata filter.

If it's the part listed as the PGM-FI-Unit, then yes, it's a $900 part. I looked on the 2004 parts fiche & couldn't find "ECU". Same with my 2000, I only found the PGM-FI. In my maintenance manual, the PGM unit is the ECU.

A salavage yard is your best bet.

    KC-10 FE out...
