My '99 got really soaked in a very bad storm a few weeks ago, cover blew away. Now it won't start, no headlights, or blinkers. Horn sounds like a dying frog. Hit either brake and the relay buzzes. Battery is strong motor turns over fine (12.8V) Fuses are all fine. Fuel pump does come on. LCD is functioning. Hoping someone here has a suggestion on what to look for.

I should mention the battery is only six months old. R/R was replaced three years ago and I installed a VFRness from Wire My Bike shortly after. I am assuming I do not have spark but I have not verified that.

Check various relays and fuses/fuse holders for water in them.

So when you turn the key the horn wil lsound when pressing the button.....but no Headlights or signals?

The horn makes just a little noise, like if the battery was at 3V. Gotta be water in here somewhere. But this happened three weeks ago and its out in the blazing sun.. I thought it would dry out and be fine.

    You checked the fuses?

See if they are pop'd or shorted...or possible full of water?

Be sure to pull a couple out and see if there is water in the actual block that the fuses go into

Ok pulled all the fuses out. Didn't see any water. Cleaned out the block with contact cleaner. Still nothing. So I took all my fairings off. Unmounted the gas tank, still connected. Turned key on..threre are no lights hooked up now, but the indicators in the dash all of a sudden show that blinkers work. Hit the start button.. almost started. Now its back to nothing, turn the key on no fuel pump.. just a vibrating relay. :-(

i know this may sound weird, but maybe the voltage on the battery is good until there is a load on it? Like if you had a poor connection on the terminal. Happened to my truck last week. Maybe put a charger on it and wiggle the terminals. Maybe water got in there,(doubtful, i also own a 99) But hey, you never really know. Rule the big simple things out first before racking your brain over small crap.

It does act like the battery is weak in every way, except that the motor tuns over with athority. I did disconnect the battery cables, cleaned the terminals and put dielectric greas on them and reinstalled. I think I will dissasemble my blinker/horn/hi-low and kill/start switches next and maybe the ignition switch. I did notice the small 3-pin connector going to the R/R is quite burnt looking. I don't believe that is the problem though, disconnecting it changed nothing.

You're on the right track with disassembling your multiswitches on the bars and cleaning those. I wouldn't leave a single connector untouched...it sounds like several got moisture in them somehow.

Simply unpluging and reconnecting the various plugs sometimes fixes electrical wierdness.

Still have not gotten her going. Everything electrical seems to work now after I cleaned and dried out every switch & connector I could find. Lights, blinkers, horn, fuel pump. Battery strong. Turns over great. No spark. Well, no spark at all while it's turning over. When I release the starter button there is just a bit if spark just before it stops spinning. PGM-FI unit? Pulse generator? The PGM-FI unit is # 38770-MBG-671. Does anyone know the differen:crazy:ce between that and a -771, or a 38770-MBG-L01 (One of these on ebay) Maybe only works on 01-02?

Check the ECU connection if water/ moisture has found its way in there that might cause it not send the juice to the coils.

I'd suggest trying to start using a jump from a car battery cuz there are indications that your battery won't handle a large load even though voltage is fine.

Well I finally got her going, it was the ECM. Found one on eBay for $150. Swapped it out and it fired right up and runs like a swiss watch. The world is a better place now. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions.

I think it may have gotten hit by lightning.
It was a really bad storm that started this fiasco.
