The U.S. Congress sets a federal budget every year in the trillions of dollars. Few people know how much money that is so we created a breakdown of federal spending in simple terms. Let's put the 2011 federal budget into perspective:
    U.S. Income: $2,170,000,000,000
    Federal budget: $3,820,000,000,000
    New debt: $1,650,000,000,000
    National debt: $14,271,000,000,000
Recent budget cut: $38,500,000,000 (about 1% of the budget)
It helps to think about these numbers in terms that we can relate to. Let's remove 8 zeros from these numbers and pretend this is the household budget for the fictitious Jones family.
Total annual income for the Jones family: $21,700
Amount of money the Jones family spent: $38,200
Amount of new debt added to credit card: $16,500
Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710
Amount cut from the budget: $385
So in effect last month Congress, or in this example the Jones family, sat down at the kitchen table and agreed to cut $385 from its annual budget. What family would cyt $385 of spending in order to solve $16,500 in deficit spending? It is a start, although hardly a solution. Now after years of this, the Jones family has $142,710 of debt on its credit card (which is the equivalent of the national debt). You would think the Jones family would recognize and address this situation, but it does not. Neither does Congress. The root of the debt problem is that voters and special interest groups typically do not send people to Congress to save money. They are sent there to bring home the bacon to their own home state or to their own personal/special interests. To effect budget change, we need to change the job description and give Congress mew marching orders. It is awfully hard (but not impossible) to reverse course and tell government to stop borrowing money from our children and spending it now. In effect, what we have is a reverse mortgage on the country. The problem is that the voters have become addicted to the money. Moreover, the American voters are still in the denial stage and do not want to face the possibility of going into rehab. And, they don't seem to care that they are passing on this burden to their children. What kind of parent would do that?

It's the American way. Every one of the fuckers should be run off and if they ever set foot back in Washington, they should receive jail time...a permanent political restraining order, if you will.

Michelle Bachman? I mean, fucking really? What the fuck is wrong with people in Iowa? The Axis of Ignorance, Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer and Dianne fucking Feinstein.....what the fuck is wrong with people in California? Ronald Reagan was not a good president, but hey, we love a loser here in the U. S. of A. We love idiots, we have to, we have allowed a whole shitload of them to run this country for a very long time. Lassie and Trigger are dead and stuffed in museums...who do we turn to next? What was I thinking...Rush freaking Limbaugh, of course. And for you left leaning folks maybe Keith Olberman? The guy was part of the greatest short attention span phenomena on tv...ESPN..that gives him credibility on so many levels....Idiots.

Rick Perry and Mitt Romney? fucking really? John Boehner, Bobby Jindal, Rick Santorum, can it really get any worse? How about Harry Ried and Barack Obama? A bunch of goddamned attorneys. It used to be that politicians served their country, ah, not anymore...it's a fucking career now. There is not a shred of hope or decency in any of these plastic bastards. It's gone too far and it now cannot be repaired. Thankfully, I won't live forever.

This country made this mess collectively, dems and republicans, the voters caused it, the politicians happily perpetrated the crime. Deal with it. It cannot be fixed, they won't let it happen. This country is a nation of idiots and there are more future GOP members born every day, after all, abortion is not the choice of people and it's bad, umkay? Who the hell is gonna fill the churches, pay all the taxes, and cut the grass of politicians and rich folk, if we allow abortions? The democrats just import their support from other countries, because they can't generate any of their own, it leaves too big of a carbon footprint and it's so much easier to be passive aggressive. And by all means, lets let the religious right, yeah, that group of fucking idiots, have a say, hell, why not? God has saved so many people, how could you not ask his minions to relay his epic helpfullness? It's always worked out so great every time a religious faction gets to wield power. The mentality will never change until an entire generation is allowed to live an entire lifecycle with no wars and the church isn't allowed to influence politics. No wars??? how the hell will we create new jobs?????????? We don't know any other way.

You could start the party of common sense, unfortunately, it will be hard when the odds are 50,000 people to 310.45 MILLION idiots.

This country has had it's run at the top, and now it's over. A bunch of fucking hill people with the I.Q. of a goat, have won, they have bled us dry, economically. It will never return to it's prior status, not in my lifetime. We are now the nation of professional athletes and rappers as role models, obesity, fast food, software, war and bad credit....we should all be so proud, after all, we got Bin Laden....

Wow. Norcalboy must have left his computer on for the neighbour's kid to get at. OK Bud....deep breath in....deep breath out.. LOL Just kidding NCB.

But you're right. Seems gov't officials, be it elected and bureaucrats, seem to think it is perfectly fine to keep spending when there is nothing in the wallet. We used to scoff when we looked at a product with a label that read "Made in China" I see changes coming.

If pro and con are opposites, what can be said about progress?

The national debt in the U.F.R.R. is steadily gojng down. And its resident is living quite well. If that country can then every country in the western world can too

I don't think you were kidding but that was a perfect example...oh my god, jesus christ save us, the unrich are speaking out loud, without submitting their views for our approval. Tap his phone and facebook page, there has to be way for us to pin a terrorist rap on this guy for having an opinion that doesn't meet our approval.

I often lament our political clime. I would welcome a truly multi-party system. I would love to see lobbyists disappear. I would love term limits, and no lifetime benefits just for getting elected once, then they might be a little more concerned about healthcare. I have no solutions, but I can scream about the problems with the best of them. I would like to see the middle class come back to America, but too many of us are too good to actually do menial work. I have heard many many times from people that they couldn't do what I do as a nurse. I just couldn't wipe people's butts when they are in a coma. I couldn't do it. It's just gross. Well, guess what, a lot of us can, and a lot of us are not hurting in this economy. My plumber makes more per hour than me and it's because he's not too good to do a dirty job. Too many of us think we have the RIGHT to too many things merely for being an American. Many teachers in the family, and they tell me that no longer do the parents back up the teachers disciple, rather they blame the teacher and say that their kids have the rights to ... (insert whatever BS here). We have become a nation of entitlements. Entitlements keep you down and uneducated, and a lack of EDUCATION makes you easy to manipulate. <see NorcalBoys post> Gotta love politics and religion. BRB, gonna go get some listerine. this thread leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Hey Reg. It is not just America. It is the whole western world. It is about time many parents start smacking their kids up the die of the head before we fall into such a state of anarchy that we will never get out of. You mentioned two professions here Reg that I have the absolute most respect for. Nurses and teachers. If I had to put up with the shit and abuse they collectively do, I would have a Fingerprint Service File number attached to my name.

Sure...teachers no longer take charge of their students the way they used to. That is only because little Johny fucking Shithead's mommy will sue their asses off. We had the Stanley Cup Riots here in Vancouver started by a small group of Anarchists and hundreds of little shit heads got "caught up in the moment" as they threw chairs, benches and barricades through windows. They took rags and rolled them up, sticking them into the gas tanks of cars and lit them...after getting caught up in the moment.

Over in London, these fucking little pukes protested the lack of jobs by looting stores for expensive TVs then smashing them on the ground. They lit huge businesses on fire as a sign of protest about the government not doing enough to furnish jobs. Well fucking doh!. You burned down a business and put several hundred more out on the streets. They burned businesses which had homes above them and forces families to flee with nothing but slippers and underwear.

I watched things unfold while working in the Transit Command Centre for the Stanley Cup Riot. I watched the TV every morning in Great Britain while I was over there and this unfolded. You saw very little of what was going on over there in the media here. It was a sight to be sure.

A lot of our society needs to be taken to task for their actions, turds and politicians alike. And lets show some support for those who are trying to do their part to make things better, and being as fiscally responsible as they can while they are at it.

    And that's the truth......bldth..........

As long as our treasury bonds have any value at all to the deluded, what's wrong with borrowing 41 cents on the dollar to pay the interest on our national debt, huh ??

NCB has been saving his rantage for a long time, and it's finally ejaculated to good effect.

Only 2 economists i heed are Paul Krugman and Neil Ferguson........and Chomsky, also, of course.

Things are so screwed up in our declining years all i hope for is Ron Paul as President with Warren Buffett as Sec. of Treasury, John Kerry as Sec of State, James Webb as Sec of Defence and Elizabeth Warren as Chair of Federal Reserve, with Nancy Grace as Attorney General prosecuting Geo W. Bush, "Big Dick" Cheney, Don Rumsfeld and Henry Kissinger as war criminals.

After appointing Goldman Sachs insiders to his cabinet, Obama can kiss my filfy ass !!

Looking at the problems in the UK and the American money woe's, the 3rd world is starting to look ok. AND, our police know where the teargas and rubber bullets are kept. "Where to get the money from?" Call me a bleeding heart hippie but (and I could be way off here) apparently 2 days worth of the worlds defence spending would eradicate world hunger.

The interrelationships between the people, groups, or organizations in a particular area of life especially insofar as they involve power and influence or conflict. Every child born in 'Merica has the ability to achieve these incredible virtues, however, it is now soooo much easier than running for president, it's called the internet.....

Ive been watching the US debt crisis unfolding in the past few weeks. It has been fascinating late night viewing from Oz. Your political system is just like ours only 10 times bigger. One side wants to spend, one side wants to cut. Stalemate. They spent so much time slagging each others ideas and in the final hour came up with a piss-poor tie over. As Oldgeezer pointed out $385. From here, Obama has no leadership, just speeches.
Surely the US fed cant start money printing 3.
As someone said previously, everyone is used to the spending it is hard to cut back.
Things are slowing down over here but no where near the levels of you guys. But our current government is spend happy. We had a 20 billion surplus. now we have a deficit and we have them for a few more years.
    I vote Norcalboy for President.
