For years, I've heard many explanations what those screwed on bolt extensions at the tips of footpegs are for. One is they are lean angle indicators to signal the rider is approaching maximum safe lean. Another is they act like frame sliders if the bike falls over. And another is they reduce vibration to the riders feet.

So what are they really for?

They are for letting the rider know how far they are leaned over (when at maximum lean), I can't see them doing anything as far as being like frame sliders, or reducing the vibs on the footpegs as they don't weigh much at all, and rearsets usually don't vibrate much at all.

I removed mine on my 6th as I was missing one on the right side and they are very long and skinny, All I could picture is coming into a corner and hooking one of them in a rut in the road, that wouldn't end well..

You can take them off, grind them down about half way with a bench grinder, and put them back on to impress your friends with your cornering prowess.

They are an easily replaceable item to let you know you are at near maximum lean angle. Once those touch asphalt, you will feel it in your foot. It tells you not to lean any further or you risk dragging parts that are harder and more expensive to replace. How would they ever work as frame sliders? They are a point and a point no where near the center of the bike when laid over. And reduce vibration how? would be easier and more effective to put a rubber part on the top of the foot peg, and many bikes have.

The anti-vibration idea seemed to make alot of sense. Consider a pair of bar ends are designed to reducie vibration on the riders hands. Maybe the Jap engineers didnt want to add rubber pads on the footrests and take away from the bikes racer image(?), just like they decided to cover the cases with a coating that looks like magnesium!

So off they go, into the parts bin.

but bar end weights are in the end of the bar, not dangling down below, and the "hero blobs" are just basically screws with a acorn like top

I always wondered just exactly where those bar end things went.

I always thought bar blobs were the fat chicas at the end of the bar who start lookin good after about nine pints.

I grounded the bolt in a corner - It snapped about 14mm off the end of the peg. Didn't realize it had broken til I stopped.
I am having a hard time finding a replacement. The series 4 uses a single center fitting where all the other models use a fork type mount.
