I have an '87 VFR700....of course with no center stand (how annoying that Honda didn't put a stand on these bikes from the factory). Anyway....I've been looking around for one to add to the bike and have located one. I'm having a hard time justifying the cost that this guy wants ($100). All the hardware is there and it apparently has been stripped and powdercoated black (he claims it cost him $50 just to powdercoat it).

I know that these stands are hard to come by....but is the price reasonable/unreasonable? It feels ridiculous to me to pay $100 for a chunk of steel and some hardware....but then again, I really want a center stand. I cringe every time I put the bike up on the swingarm stand fearing that it's gonna tip over accidentally....and it would certainly be nice to be able to service the back wheel on the road if the need arises.

    Thought? Buy it or pass?

    Thanks.

Well I can't really say if $100 for that 2nd gen. centerstand and mounting hardware is reasonable or not Indy. But just for a point of reference,a brand new OEM centerstand with no mounting hardware at all for a 6th gen. bike lists out at $107.

You are talking aboot a very rare part, price is reasonable to me considering I am surprised you found one at all. Just saying, do not look a gift horse in the mouth if you really want it.

I would grab it, when I was looking for one I offered a local guy $200 for one on a turd he was selling and he wouldn't part with it. I did find one after I emailed every person in the world with a gen 2 700/750 part for sale and got one complete near mint shipped to the door in 3 days for $50.

first off, honda DID put centerstands on the 87's. the trick is, it was an option. some bikes had them, some bikes didnt (otherwise, you wouldnt have found the one you did). as for the price, im gonna be honest with ya indy, this is purely subjective. the question you should be asking is, is if the centerstand assembly is worth 100 bucks to you. I can't remember what I had to pay for mine, but if I were looking for one and wanted one bad enough, I'd be very likely to drop 100 bucks on it, especially considering how difficult they are to find.

as long as all 4 of the necessary pieces are there (centerstand, centerstand swivel mount pin thingy (looks like a small tube about 10" long or so), spring, and cotter pin), in good condition, and in tact, I'd say 100 bucks isnt totally insane for one.

Consider a shop stand. They will last years after the VFR is long gone.

Powdercoating a centerstand that old for fifty bucks is about right. likely included stripping or blasting. A centerstand on my 91 was optional. At the time they were about 100 bucks and some change. They are great fun to install.

Responding to your own quote. Amazingly enough, even Tink hasn't tried that yet.

    Sure I have.

And I'm still waiting for a response by management to my request for the ability to thank myself for my own awesome posts.

I also agree $50 for powdercoating would be about right.

$100 for a powdercoated centerstand with all neccesary hardware!?!?

    That's a good deal IMO.

One sold on Ebay a few months ago for well over $200.

About a year after I got my '87 I just ordered the parts right off my local dealer's website for around $120.00. How rare can they be? After having all the stuff in hand I decided I didn't need all that much more dead weight hanging off my bike so I ended up E-Baying it a few months after I got it. The shop stand is a much better idea. It stays in the garage after you're done working on the bike.

the downside is, the rearstand doesnt come with, and if you've gotta change a tire or fix XYZ on the road, you dnt have a stand with you. centerstands permit this. kinda a huge advantage.

There are some new shop type stands coming out that are combination stands and antennas for cells, GPS units and TV. They fold and look just like sissy bars. ;)

Also don't forget the Lectric-Ass-iss-ted asspect ala BMW K1200. When them bikes are loaded its nice to have the aid of an electric motor to do your hoisting (up-on dah center stand) I got a center stand on my EX and its nice. Dont have one on my Viffer though. Dont think I would go for one either, but $100.00 seems reasonable, shit after I have spent $2.00 on a lousy screw for said bike, I dont penny pinch when it comes to the one I luv. Cheers

Thanks for all the responses, guys. I think I will go ahead and drop the cash on it. I think that if I don't get it, I'll regret letting it go.

BTW, I posted this on another VFR forum as well and got only one response.....looks like this is the place to be for gen2 info.

    Thanks again.
