I just got this bike for a very good deal and I am in need of help. It will start and idle smooth but will not carry its own wieght. I have to clutch the crap out of it just to go down the road and back. I just put new plugs in it (a job in itself) and the front two were lean (white & dry) and the rear two were rich (black & wet). I thought it might be the timing or the timing advance but I have not found any info on it at all. Any help would be much apprecciated this is my first bike and I am excited about getting it up and going. Thanks

I had a similar problem when I got my '85 500. Except, my right side cylinders were dry fouled and the lefts were lean. I cleaned the carbs out, now the colors match. Also take note of the pilot screws were ever tampered with; they may not be set correctly.

If you haven't done so already, purchase the service manual.

Oh and welcome to the board.

I took the carbs off to change the throttle cables and that was a pain in the butt to get them back on

Yeah, it's especially hard if your carb boots are hardened.

You think the bike is fine though just needs carbs cleaned? I am just taking stabs in the dark here cuz I don't really know that much about bikes at all. I just don't want to take it to the shop cuz thats stupid expensive.

I need a starter solenoid, I got one off ebay but I guess the guy didn't feel like shipping it cuz its been like two weeks. Also is there a alternative to the shifter linkage? I keep catching it and bending the crap out of it then it don't work till I straighten it out as best I can. Thanks

Go to my site and click on the "How To" link. There's a section that shows the procedure for removing and installing the carbs. Don't try removing or installing the cables with the carbs attached to the heads!
