My VFR's petrol pump leaks fuel around the center seal when the temp drops below 5 degrees. This started about a month ago . Origionally I thought it was fuel lines so I replaced them and the leak stopped for a while . Then it started again so I double hose clamped the hoses on the pump . When I had a close look at the pump when its cold the whole pump gets wet with fuel . And this pump has the relay on the end ( Which dick from Honda thought that would be a good idea) so I havent tried starting it since. In Australia we've had 10% Ethenol for a while ,but I'm still not convinced it doesn eat rubber . Anyway has anybody tried one of the aftermarket petrol pumps ,there's heaps to choose from . The VFR's pump works from the pulses from the CDI . So I'm not sure any of these pumps would work , or would they work by just getting power from the battery . The Carby pumps only deliver approx 4psi . Even If I have to buy a new pump from Honda that relay isnt going to be used . I'll add one .

I actually found that servicehonda.com still carries them brand new, and after installing the new one in my 87, it works great! the new cost isnt ragingly expensive either, around $120-$130 USD

Watch out for any fuel leaks in proximity to those sparking points !!!!

You could likely find a used replacement at a breaker's yard cuz exactly the same (Mitsubishi) pump was used on many, many Hondas and other bikes from early 80s to early 90s.

Got up this morning after a big frost and the whole pump was covered in water beads. Thats Ethenol for ya . That relay sits under that black cap at the end so ???? And I"ve heard of a couple of these catching fire so I'm not using it till i can fix it.

I'm about to go to our local Honda dealer for prices . I can get an aftermarket one from the States for about $70.00 including postage.

Some of the crap these petrol companies put in the fuel could have something to do with it . The paint thinners crap causes the most problems. Where it eats rubber. For the amount we're paying for fuel ?????

Got it fixed . Got a Quote from our local Honda Dealer and they want $220 for a new one .
So I checked out what one of our wreckers had and found one on a Suzuki 750 . Turned out to be exactly the same . And got it for $50 . So there are other bikes out there with the same pump .

Has anybody had a close look at how these work . I thought that relay at the end was just that , But it works like a solenoid to work the diaphram back and forth. I thought these had a rotating pump.
Not sure if theres a relay somewhere else but now I know you can use heaps of other types of pumps.
I should have realized when there is only two wires .

Anyway its going good so far apart from its raining so I couldn't take it for a ride.

Yes, there's a separate electronic fuel pump relay--which often fails and can easily be by-passed.
