I know this has been covered in many threads, but I have a problem. About 6 months ago I experienced the all too common rectifier/regulator problem that many of have experienced. It was not an OEM Honda unit, but an aftermarket unit. After initial testing I was able to determine that it wasn't charging correctly. I then replaced the second regulator with an OEM rectifier from Honda unit. It seemed to work correctly for about 4 months but then I noticed another problem. I then tore the bike apart and noticed that the connection between the stator and the R/R had been burnt. I pulled the stator and noticed that approx. 2/3rds of the copper windings were discolored. I did a few resistance tests on the Stator and was unable to get proper ohm readings across the three posts.

My question is do I need to spend $500+ at the dealership for a new Stator and R/R?? Does anybody have any reliable dealers that can sell these for less? Also, does is anyone aware of anything else that could be causing these problems. I did my best to check any connections for loose connections and/or corrosion and wasn’t able to come up with anything conclusive.

Sorry for the long post; please help!!!!

I got a stator from ricksmotorsportelectrics.com. It seems to be a quality unit, tho the way the wiring runs is not the same as the OEM, specifically where the rubber grommets are. I got mine for about $140. Rick's doesn't show them as having a stator for a 98 VFR, but they may be able to re-wind it for you. The list an r/r for $120. But I can't comment on how good they are.

I just got off the phone with ricksmotorsportelctrics.com and they do in fact have both the rectifier/regulator and stator in stock. I’m waiting on Rick to give me a call because of a few quick questions I have, but I think I’m going to go ahead and place the order. They have a one year warranty on all parts, and they are only going to cost $260 plus tax. Much cheaper than Honda……lets just hope they work correctly……..

    Thanks for your help VMAN!

God! I'm going through this right now. Bike's been in the shop (not a Honda dealer, but it was just 100 feet away from where the bike died....) about a week now. Waited a ridiculous amount of time for the stator to arrive; THAT's been installed, now they think the R/R may have been toasted as well. The bike holds a charge fine at idle, but when throttling up loses some. They are apparently waiting on specs for my bike from a Honda dealer across town to verify. Since I'm virtually useless mechanically I'm pretty much at their mercy. It's very frustrating being without the bike, especially as it's my only form of transportation. The bike has 25,000 miles on it, so I suppose this issue was going to crop up eventually. Hopefully once all is said and done I won't have to worry about this again. Really, other than this, the bike has been fantastic.

Not much help as far as your post, but this just struck a nerve with me and I just needed to vent a bit!

If you're replacing both the stator and the rectifier/regulator you should also replace the battery if you havn't replaced it recently.
