Does anyone have any ideas on why a 1985 vf1000f fuel tank would be blocked?

I just bought a replacement tank from ebay but it had alot of rust in it. I dont know if it was flowing before but the seller said it was.

I am cleaning the tank right now with Evapo-rust and I noticed the flow is almost nothing. If I blow on the exit tube and shake the tank around, I can get it to flow. If I shake it around again, it gets blocked. There is nothing rattling around in there.

I am wondering is there a possibility of a blocked filter or a peacock failure issue? Is there some sort of safety valve (incase the bike falls over) that maybe isnt working properly?

Does anyone have any drawings for the internal features of the VF1000F fuel tank or an explanation?

I hate to do this to you, Ron, but this is a peacock:

What you are talking about is a petcock:

And for what it's worth, I think that you are on the right track.

I'm not positive but I think the petcock may be vacuum actuated.

    Lol..peacock

Anyhow, so if its vacum actuated, what does that mean exactly? It should still flow when the valve is on or in res..correct?

If its a petcock failure, is there anything I can do to rectify the problem? Are there any internal filters that I can get access to?

Thanks for the image... I was wondering if there was something else inside the tank...

Yes there are two long tubes with inaccessible filters on the ends

For some reason they put screen filters on the ends of the tubes that feed into the petcock, and you can't get access to them--when they get blocked they don't flow.

You can pull the petcock and blow compressed air into the tubes maybe blow the crud off.

Or run a long stiff steel wire in on a drill and roto-router the tubes clean.

also punch thru the screens with a long stiff wire or drill thru the internal tubes to bypass the screens, then use external filters (clear-type so you can see the debris) on the line out of the tank before the fuel pump.

Sometimes i use a radiator shop dip tank to clean all the crud out, then red-cote the inside of the tank--then have to punch thru the screens coated with red-cote...

    Thanks Kenny

My suspicion is the exit line needs to be primed for fuel to flow. Once I prime it, it seems to flow easily. I am hoping that the case and its part of the overall design using a fuel pump to get the fuel flowing...

Its all guess work without very much information on the tank and what is "normal".
