First of all, I'm keeping my '98 VFR because I can't bear the thought of not having it. And the wife is OK two-up on it, but not for long, long days.

I'm going to look at and test ride a very low mileage BMW K1200LT tomorrow night. I think she'll be comfortable on that all day. Anyone feel otherwise?

I'm also going to pick up a very low mileage 1978 Yamaha DT400E next week, just because I can. Should be a blast, and I miss that two-stroke sound.

I better get the garage cleaned out!

Bro Knife, Before you pull the plug on the K1200LT, Give the ST1300 a try or a Yami FJR1300. The Bemmer is nice but can be pain in the A$$ for maintenance. Just my 2cents
I just finish replace the water pump on my GS for the 3rd time. I have to strip everything out to get to the pump.#$%$#%%$$T$%$T beep....beep...beep......

I am having similar thoughts - I may trade my 05 VFR for the 1200LT and keep my 2k VFR.

the 1200LT's are too goldwingbattlestargalacticalandyacht for me. I sat on a R1200RT the other day, amazing balance, and the curb weight is only 50 pounds more than a 5th gen VFR, and carries 7 gallons of fuel on board. I'd look at the K1200 and 1300 GT as well if you looking to get yourself into a german ride. BMW does make some of the finest motorcycles money can buy.

I appreciate all the replies. I took my wife to see the K1200LT last night, she loved the passenger seat and all, so I now own it. But I'll repeat, I'm keeping the VFR, as well as the DT400E.

As far as a touring bike for taking the lady along goes, it doesn't matter as much what you think of the bike... Its what she thinks.

Looks like a vfr with a touch of gold wing thrown in. You must be getting ready for a month long vacation on it.

somewhere near Seattle, but my heart is just north
I have a K12rs of about the same vintage (2001). Same engine configuration. Lotsa fun & i really notice the smoother ride on a freeway run. Comfy smooth good acceleration. the longer wheelbase & more weight will slow you down a bit in the tight twisties, but other than that, no complaints. check out I-bmw.com for some technical info. more RS oriented, but some imformation about the Light Truck. I also agree with the "what She thinks" perspective!

It's a 2005 K1200LT, loaded, with 4,755 miles on it. Took a very long test ride on it two-up today. They will service it and I'll take it home Tuesday. Handles surprisingly well in the twisties. It's not my VFR, but I think I can live with it if it makes the wife comfortable on long trips. Will still have to stop a lot for the frequent pee breaks she needs. What the hell is with that, anyway?

I find riding the bike makes me have to pee sooner. Maybe its the crappy roads out here beating up my bladder. Whats the range and mileage on a 1200LT?

    Congrats Knife! Sharp looking ride.

My wife has always been against riding on any and every motorcycle, until I got her on a Goldwing. She liked that, but I have a pretty strong suspicion she'd like that K1200LT as well.

6.4 gallon tank, ~300 mile range. 40-50+ mpg.

I strongly considered a Wing, because it's a Honda and also a great ride. But the BMW won out. It's a very nice bike. I thought it would be a bit ponderous, but once moving it's as light as can be, handles twisties well, and is as smooth as silk at speed. I took off on my test ride, looked down at the speedo, and I was doing 85 (in a 50)! I'll have to watch that.
