Right. I've done many clutches before, including my 2001. *Somewhere* in the far back memory of time I remember reading or seeing that the Gen 5 VFRs used two different clutch pack setups - as I remember, the early years 98-99 used a judder spring, the later years did not. When I took my 01 apart I found no judder spring, but possibly a different friction disc ?
Does anyone know *for certain* when and what the differences are between the two clutch pack designs ? Mine's working ... Ok ... but I have almost zero friction zone. No air in the fluid, no clutch slip.
    Bueller ?
    TIA,

The clutch plates and discs seem to have a different part number, and the judder spring is missing on the later models. Service Honda microfiche is your friend.

You can decode using info from here:

    http://www.groupwracing.com/hondapartnumbers.html

The product code will help in determining if the parts were used in other engines, or if they are specific to that engine.

Thanks guys. I have been looking at fiche (servicehonda) of course and I note that 1) even tho the judder spring and seat are shown, they are not in the listing for the 2001. 2) clutch discs #8 and 20, identified as the innermost and outermost discs, have identical part numbers! but different than the #7 discs. Further, the Service Manual gives no separate thickness for the first and last discs.
    http://www.servicehondapsn.com/fiche_section_detail.asp
Finally, I've measured all my clutch discs - well within spec, most running 2.98+. service limit is 2.5.
I may have to go back and bleed the system again, but I'm pretty sure there's no air.
Anyway I've ordered two discs #8 /#20 just to insure there's no difference, or something missing.

I want my friction zone back! :)
