Are you sure the front forks are nitrogen charged? I figured they were just oil and air gap like most conventional forks. Just assuming here though.

Well, stock form its air/tranny fluid. I replaced my oil seals last summer. I know it definitly tells you the amount in the claymer book. I dont have the exact amount, but I could get that from the book if you need it.

Stock had normal air, I believe max pressure is 6psi. The seals will wear out long before the air causes them any problems.

best thing I did was put in some progressive springs, that way you can get rid of the entire "air" system altogether.

Alright, for your 84 700, right hand fork= 11.9 oz. left hand fork= 12.5 oz. Some Dextron ATF should do the trick. Also, you are going to want 0-6 psi air (use hand pump, not compressed air). Good Luck!

The volume measurements are just approximate, what you need to do is measure the oil level. I usually set VF700 forks at 225mm. That distance is measured to the surface of the oil from the top of stanchion tube where the cap threads. Make sure that the spring is REMOVED and the fork is in the fully compressed position. You'll find that the exact amount needed is a lot different than the volume spec. Do not use ATF, get some motorcycle fork oil from your local dealership. 10w works best on unmodified forks.

As for pressure: 1) nitrogen is not used in these forks 2) do not put ANY pressure on them. They work best with no air preload. Adding air causes more problems, if you find that you have trouble with bottoming then you should add more fluid in 25mm increments until it goes away. If you add more than 75mm I'd suggest going with 15w fluid.

    I hope this helps!

    Taken directly from the claymer......

ATF is fine, dont worry. It's just a dampener....

Go with the 10wt fork oil. ATF is about 7.5 wt or so and I've heard not as good for the seals.

    Exactly.
Im sure if it is going to cause damage they wouldn't tell you to put it in. If I where you, I would pick up some progressive springs.....
