Hi. I'll be going on a 4 day road trip to new york, maine, hew hampshire, vermont leaving july 28th 2011, and I was wondering if anybody out there can give me some advice on what to see or which road to travel. I am not booking any hotels so it doesn't really matter on which route to take. thanks in advance. trip plan.JPG

When you make your run through New York, I would not take the NYS Thruway from Buffalo to NYC. It is like 400 miles of sheer boredom. When you get to the Rochester area, I would head north of Syracuse to the Adirondack region and go to Albany before heading south to NYC. The other option is to go south of Buffalo and travel through the Finger Lake region and end up in NYC that way. If you don't do either, then you're not seeing the best parts of the state and you'll have one hell of a boring ride.

+1 on the above. I'm in CA now; but when I lived back east (in MA) I spent a fair amount of time out and about, and the Finger Lakes region is pretty spectacular.

I was born and raised in NH and I have to say some of my favorite rides (not all necessarily done on the motorcycle but should still live up) are Route 1A and 1B on the seacoast through Rye and Newcastle and that area is about as New England as you can get...like riding through a movie set. Then it looks like you are going to cross about mid way up NH back through and in there I say you should definitely try and hit up the Mount Washington toll road. It goes up the mountain, which is the 8th highest peak on the eastern seaboard *only 400 ft. below Mt. Mitchell, though. There are great views, the ride is insane and the food at the top is pretty good. The Kancamangus Hwy (rte 112) is pretty awesome and goes East-West. There are covered bridges and stuff near Albany and some really nice scenic stuff up there. Love that area of NH. The white mountains rock...

+1 you'll probably ride into a bridge abutment to get it over with by the time you get to Utica on the thruway. I'd go south thru the southern tier, finger lakes, and/or through northern PA ie Wellsboro, then thru the Poconos to Del Water Gap area.
Also, with some route adjustments, you can ride up Mt Equinox near Manchester, VT, , visit NHIS or Lime Rock, visit battleship cove in New Bedford MA(?), or the Navy Sub museum in Groton, CT (home of the Nautilus). There's probably 34565464 historical sites to visit in the northeast if that's your thing.

    Hey there,
I live in the Finger Lakes Region in NY (Ithaca) and riding through that is just beautiful. There are roads that mix curves with straight lines which it up nicely. I'd check it out. I love the areas from Keuka Lake to Cayuga Lake. I highly recommend riding through the Finger Lakes.

    Stay North!

Personally, I'd avoid anything south of Route 2 in Massachusetts and extend your Maine portion to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park or beyond. You may also consider some meandering through northern New Hampshire and Vermont instead of a straight shot. There are some great roads, worth getting off the east/west bias of the trip. The Adirondacks in NYS offer a myriad of possibilities too.

I own a small motel in Littleton, NH, The Maple Leaf, which is on or close to your route. We welcome bikes in a big way. Let me know if you want any details for our neck of the woods.
