It's a funny discussion I have with my until recently triathlon racing brother, he thinks me riding a motorcycle even though I'm ATGATT is unnecessarily risky and I think his long rides on bicycles on public roads with no safety gear is risky pointing out he can take off as much skin falling off at 40mph on a bicycle as a motorbike. Oddly enough he's had more of his friends with long stints in hospitals after crashes than I have.*

I used to ride bicycle to and from work 24/7 12 months a year , Rain sun snow. I think the close calls are about the same between the bicycle and MC. But I am confident the end result would be more disastrous on the MC simply because you are likely to be travelling faster. And my ATGATT on the bicycle was as noted above. But the very common points on both were and are, I am always very cognizant of who is around me and what they might do. Where my outs are. And as important as ATGATT is being visible. Colour, lights, movement...whatever it takes. I ride during daylight hours on the VFR with the high beams on. And I have HID's which are great. Even on the bicycle I rode with front and rear lights on during the daytime. Back then, when we used Alkaline batteries, even though they did not last long, they were cheap insurance

That would be little consolation, cleaning your guts out of a full suit isn't fun, you never get rid of the smell.

I split all the time but not at 40-60 mph with an open lane next to the car I'm passing. They're not expecting a m/c at that speed to whiz by so close and I'd end up paying the price for them to swerve to the open lane. If you have an open lane move in to it completely like you own it and get in site of the driver's side mirrors, at least gives you a better chance.

For the dudes in Spandex, shoot a PM to Crusty. He is moving to NY and maybe he will propose now that it's legal.

Posting self portraits of same here is risky.

I could PM them to you

This HOG rider stuff is easily explained, folks need to belong to something, whether its a brand of bike, a sports team, a religion, a political party, or a message board, its all part of meeting the same need. Folks also need to make fun of something, whether its a brand of bike, a sports team, a religion, a political party, or a message board. Also meets a need.

Think about it this way, if it was only one guy out there running around dressed head to toe in Harley shit and you were making fun of him, you'd just be picking on someone and that would be mean. And boring. We should be thankful there's a ton of them out there.

You know, someone somewhere has to be producing those do rags and vest patches, they aint making themselves. Economic activity can't be denied..........

Thanks! Just have whatever you have in mind shipped direct from San Francisco to save a few bucks. My needs are minimal, " just gimme a pair of loose fitten shoes, some tight pussy and a warm place to shit."

Which is why 40mph was stipulated, the reality is even at 40mph a motorcycle accident has the potential to be more dangerous due to the motorcycle itself.

My last low speed off was at 40mph in 2004 an instant low side slap down due to mid corner oil spill and besides broken ribs I received a small painful at the time ding in my left upper shin bone through the leather pants thick long knee Armour probably from the bar end, I truly believe the padding and leather did it's job and without my shin would have fractured at least.

Being AGATT at least I lost no skin the same couldn't be said by another rider in Emergency at the same to time who's buddy said he crashed at only 25-30mph and had slid into road side gravel, being in Tshirt shorts and joggers was top to toe covered in blood. The nurses were scrubbing him before I got in and were still scrubbing his wounds with brushes after I left with my rib XRays 2 1/5 hours later, they weren't being gentle with him at the time either.

Maybe if the gubbamint finds out that one can suffer as much or more injury on a bicycle as a motorcycle, some lobbyist will start pushing buttons for bicycle riders having to wear full leathers and maybe even seatbelts.

Good call but you missed air bags.

They have long time mandated bicycle riders to wear Helmets here which think is a good idea, but besides sometimes wearing elbow pads, heavy gauge MTB shorts and sturdy clip in shoes when mountain biking rocky trails wear nothing special myself.

A crash at speed is bad whether it be on a pedal bike or a motor bike. I was lucky, the worst I have been hurt was one day while riding my fixie with some friends, for some reason that I can't explain I stopped pedaling and it sent me to the ground. I tore a rotator cuff and was in quite a bit of pain for about a year. I have also low sided my recumbent in a race giving me large areas of road rash. I was about 5 hours from home and quite a painful ride as sitting was uncomfortable. I think it was the same year that I crashed my homemade endurance racer twice at speed. Once when the front wheel blew 25 miles into a 200 mile race and again 3 weeks later at Grundy county raceway when my pedal broke unclipping me giving me roadrash upon roadrash

Spandex is worn by serious cyclists because it works. It allows pedaling without restriction. I took about a 10 year siesta from motorcycling and instead rode my bicycles over 5000 miles with a peak one year of 9800 miles. I do it for fitness anymore, riding 44-55 miles a week. Beats getting fat from turning the throttle and shifting gears. Moderation.

    Those too..;)

Here it's the State's Rights thing and even extends to counties and municipalities. Fairly universal for kids so far as helmets go. Not to worry though, the bicyclists will do something to overcome any item of safety gear.

Full leathers, fullface helmets, boots, belts and airbags for skateboards too. Big Brother is not watching but he sure as hell is trying to sell stuff..

Funny thing about helmet laws, motorcycle helmet laws and bicycle helmet use: I was in Kalifornia back before they passed a mandatory helmet law and was amazed how all the motorcyclists shunned the use of helmets vs the road bicycles I saw, everyone of em had a styro-foam skid lid on

Far as moderation goes,...think the singer from the Stone Temple Pilots said it best, Moderation is masturbation...Me gots a stationary bike that got 53,000 miles which I am trying to wear out. Riding bicycles makes you a better motorcycle rider, road rides are good too, but I swore off the mountain bike thing  cause there you can really split your melon open.

In the midwest there are only a few states with helmet laws. Missouri is strangely an exception where we have a brain bucket law. I am amazed at how many riders won't ride our great motorcycle roads. Nearby in Illinois helmet use is about 1% including sportbike riders.

I feel sorry for you sitting on that trainer sweating and having the scenery not change from one moment to the next, How do you prevent yourself from going out of your mind. I have a nice clutch style trainer but I can't stand it. I may get on it a few sessions during the winter. As far as intensity I have ridden as far as 344 miles in a day I think I was 54 then. I don't do that anymore hence moderation.

I would agree that mountain biking is different than road riding. Way more anaerobic. they work better on snow than road bikes too.

Not sure who is stone temple pilot is. One thing about songs that I heard when young was that when listened to today through the lens of 40-45 years they are pretty much crap and their messages are totally weak. Enjoy the music while you still like it.
