You got the special 250 Ninjette valve adjusting tools? They consist of a deep deep socket with a fixed handle and a couple of funky feeler gauges. Me, I gots a Ninja 500, so I make do with my flex head 10 millie spanner along with some regular feeler gauges. In the past, I have custom tuned some of those feelers over a candle to give em a bend and then re-shaped them so they could fit some tight applications.

Turning wrenches for a living and coming home to a basket case could make the strongest men weak. Its just a state of mind really. Go by your gut, I know when I gots a project, me likes to get er done without having long term chit on my bench. Thats just me though, the dance with a high-mileage vehicle is slow as you already know. Your gona have to pay sooner or later

First time I have heard THAT!

I have ridden a Ninja 250 before, so I understand.

BTW, the Ninja 500 is a fun little bike and parts are a lot easier to get. It's not a V4 however. I have always liked the VF500. If I would find one in pristine condition I would probably spring for it.

Sorry to hear about the motor.

If it is the bottom end I'd just watch my revs and run it till it blows. Like you said....may not be worth getting a donor motor.

The VF500 is MUCH more powerful than the Ninja 500, and as you said above, the Ninja isn't a V4. I've been bitten by the V4 bug, and I don't think I can get away from it! LOL

I know all about high mileage vehicles, especially the ones that are known to be problematic! I drive a 98 Dodge Intrepid with the 2.7. For those that don't know, that engine is known for issues. I have to say that it's been pretty good to me, although that wouldn't be the case if I had to pay someone else to do the work!

It would be interesting to see an autopsy on your motor before you blow it. I'll bet the bearings have worn because of low oil pressure. Which in turn the worn bearings will loose oil pressure. A catch 22 for sure. If you don't park it soon, then you should start looking for another motor. It would be cheaper and a faster fix than a rebuild of one of these.

Oh by the way that 2.7 motor...... The main problem is the cam belt tensioner is hydraulic. It has a pressure hole of .060 to feed the piston to keep tension on the belt. That hole gets plugged and the tension is no longer the belt slips and the valves hit the pistons.

I would inspect that tensioner or you will be loosing that motor too.

Have a fun summer and keep that Ninja in good shape. :peace:

That sucks J. I've had mine riding and non-riding, riding and non-riding since I've had it. Hopefully once she comes out of the shop this week for tires and such, I can get the rest of the summer on her. Or maybe not.... :heh:

My car is also having problems. So there is that to deal with as well. I've had thoughts creep into my head about going and getting something newish. Which I may need the money the bike could give me. So i have those bad thoughts creeping into my head....

Yeah, the bike is parked for now, and the replacement engine is in thought, but not financially feasible at this time.

The early 2.7's were notorious for sludge issues, with the high combustion pressures that they run, higher temperatures, etc. causing bottom end failures. Mine is as clean as a whistle! The timing CHAIN tensioner has been changed, since I've had it apart for various issues, water pump, rod bearing failure (due to my lack of maintenance once) oil pan leak, etc... I'm not scared of it! :)

I bought this bike about a week ago. Tried to find it on the fourm before hand but am just now seeing it. Feel pretty good about it now lol. Oh well, Craigslist is craigslist. I'll ride it until it blows and then get something else

I think you are thinking that 6 gen bike. This is the 1st gen you volunteered to rebuild because you love them so much.

Don't quite catch what you mean. As how bad the motor is or something else?
