Let's say that you paid $3000 for a slightly scruffy 31,000 mile 2000 bike.

Could you buy and install the extras for $800?

What the heck are "new tabs"? Other than that, what k1c says. A stock yellow 2000 goes for about $3500 to $4500 in Northern Cal, depending on miles, etc. The Penske alone would cost between $800-900, the Sargent another $350-400, so it seems like a really good price. If somebody has gone to the trouble of adding all those items, it's most likely been maintained pretty well, too.

I'm a newb rider so I don't know how much those upgrades are really worth it for me. The seat and heli bars are beneficial, the rest is all greek to me. The plastics concern me a little. Might be worth it to check it out.

I'm also looking at a cherry gen 3 for $1700. The photos looks very good, 9 out of 10. Same miles. Has a Corbin seat and exhaust but that's pretty much it. Plastics are good on this one.

What do you mean? Aren't tabs the stickers that goes on the license plate, that you renew every year?

You can have mine for $5000.

    THAT'S biased.

2000 VFR's in my neck of the woods go for between $2800 and $4000 depending on mileage, condition and extras.

Tabs are those little things that come in a sheet, and you tear one off and put it under your tongu......... Errrr, wait. Wrong forum

That must be it, though I've always heard them referred to as "tags". As far as your concern about all the optional equipment and you being a new rider, all I can say is that darn near everybody who rides for a while likes to upgrade the suspension. That particular bike has about $1200-1400 dollars worth of suspension upgrades, although the springs might not be within the proper weight range for you. And again, somebody who like a bike well enough to add those types of accessories cares about it.

But you never know. Maybe the other one will appeal to you more.

I guess 3800 isn't a bad price. There are lots of extras on there. Although, extras are an investment for the one that installs them, they do not always generate revenue on the back side. It all depends on how she runs. Those extras aren't worth diddly if she runs like crap.

I figured you would say that yellow was worth at least $1000 more, drewl.

I'd be surprised if a gear driven cam VFR ran like crap. I looked at a 97 before I bought my 99, all the ad said was 11,000 miles, $3000. Bike ran like a top. It had been down on both sides and would need a full set of plastics though. Now I know why the guy didn't have any pics of it up. I ended up paying 3000 for my 99 with 13k on it, bone stock and needing tires.

Ahhh, you might be right, hadn't thought of that. Just tried to go to the ad and re-read it and see if that made sense, but the ad was taken down. Just hadn't heard them refered to like that before.

I'd say go with the $3000 in cash and see if he takes it, but it's probably worth $3500 or perhaps more with those upgrades. I paid $3750 for my 98 in 2006. It had heli bars and the sargent seat. I got a penske rear and racetech porgessives up front which totalled over $1000. If it looks pretty good, and you know you want a VFR, then that one has the big upgrades that most people want already done. The VFR being a niche bike allows you to be reasonably sure it hasn't been stunted and also means you most likely aren't competing with young kids to buy it so he may be willing to negotiate a bit.

edit: hell I went back and reread that ad. hell, that is a decent price even if he doesn't budge. Those levers and steel braided lines, and pipe, etc... You wouldn't need anything except maybe some bags. Pretty much a steal IMO.
