So after getting tired of my bike running so hot as these machines do, I installed the VTR fan and the Nissan Pulsar thermo switch to replace my non-working stock switch.

All I can say is wow, what a difference. The fan kicks on at 89c (192f) and off at 85c (185f), no more heating up in low speed conditions, and the cooling while standing still is surprisingly good even though the fan is now pushing.

I got the thermo switch from Napa for $53, it is a two terminal switch so I had to run a ground wire to it. And I have no seeping issues as some have reported, since the o-ring sits outside of the stock position. I simpley smoothed the surface down with some 320 grit sand paper and then polished it up to make a good contact surface for the o-ring.

Time will tell how well the RR deals with the additional fan run time. I think I'm going to get a new RR and the VFRness just to be safe.

Tomorrow it is going to be over 40c (104f) with the humidex, and I'm planning a full day of riding. If it survives that all will be well.

Modifications, not Modifatios (don't know how I typed that)!

Sounds like a sweet mod. I was riding today through LA traffic and the bike hovered around 200-210 most of the time, once getting up to 220 when the fan kicked on. It was a little toasty.

Actually the rr may not be affected and may be helped. You are decreasing the load that must be shunted through the unit. The regulator is in parallel with the DC output. Too bad you are not running more load at higher rpm as that is when the rr heats up the most.

Rode over 300 k yesterday, ambient tempature outside was 35c, 40c with the humidex.

The bike ran at 79c/80c at speed, up to 91c at stops, fan kicked on at 89c. Once back up to speed the fan kicked off just above 80c. While running low speed behind traffic she got up to 85c, no fan running. A little bit of heat on my left knee, but was very hot out.

Running standing still she will climb above 100c, I didn't wait to see how high it would go. For me it was more importatnt to get the running temperature down.

The fan does run allot more, but when the temp outside is 35c, I would expect any vehicle to be running the fan. This should also help taking load away from the RR.

    Looks good so far. :)

I may go back to the stock fan, the engine sure runs cooler but the heat coming off of her is deadly. I think the nissan thermo switch and engine ice is doing the cooling. I don;t feel that the push fan is needed. We will see how it works with the stock fan back in, and will report back my findings.

On my 3rd gen - I used Water Wetter, a lower-temp t-stat switch (from a mid-80's Honda car, don't recall which one), swapped the oil cooler for a larger VF1000F unit, and cut slats/grates in the middle fairing pieces.

Bike runs much cooler but my ankles still get too hot for comfort. It's really only a problem when sitting in traffic during the Georgia summers.

I'd like to get a larger-capacity radiator as well, been looking for one that fits the 3rd gen for a while now.

The heat in your ankles is from the exhaust, not coolant or engine temp. Anything short of putting a heat shield on isn't gonna help.

Just an addition to the cooling thing. I recently did the thermostat replacement/ flushed radiators/new coolant etc. It all helped. About a month later, I removed the snorkel and de-flappered. This appeared to make my bike run cooler by approx 5 - 10 degrees. I very rarely get the 100-110 degrees in traffic that I did previously. Coincidence???
    Anybody else get this??

    Same here

I got that result when I did the same but I also did the pair valve blockoff plates at the same time... (not sure if this is correct name).

The pair blockoff plates may help with engine temp. I changed my bad thermostat when I put mine in so I have no way of telling.

I want to put the Nissan Pulsar thermo switch on mine, do you have a part number for it?
I can't remember what years they even made those cars, do you happen to know if all years of Pulsar's had the same switch or yours came from a certain year and engine size.

Thanks, I'll order one this week.

The crazy thing is I was at Napa on Saturday with a different Intermotor part number that I got from the european VF web site and the guy at Napa said he had never heard of Intermotor and couldn't cross-reference my part number.
