My VF500 is back on the road!

I had to lean the air screws out to 2.5 turns as it was fogging me out of the garage with exhaust fumes at 1.5 turns.
Idles perfect, runs perfect! Great throttle response too. The surging at highway speed is completely gone & it fires up with just a bump on the starter. Before the teardown full choke used to make it turn about 5200 rpm. Now it only goes up to about 3000 rpm on full choke. I do believe I fixed it!

    A note on valvetrain noise:
Before it was quiet when cold & started ticking on the front cylinder after it warmed up.
Now it ticks when cold & gets quiet as it warms up. No noise at all when up to riding temp.

Hell, I might just skip the carb synch. It runs so good now I hate to screw around with it.

I didn't realize we were talking about a VF series. I take it back - your shovelhead would have a more reliable valvetrain.

seriously - congrats and good work

IIRC, this bike has 23k on the clock. I would recommend removing the cam covers and inspecting the valve train and setting the valve lash.

The FSM and two feeler gauges will keep you in good stead when setting the lash.

Once the lash is set you'll need to synch the carburetors. No shortcuts here.

Good luck and keep us posted on the progress.

    Thanks!
I was very carefull as this was my first V4 teardown. I quadruple checked everything before closing it back up so it should be a little while before I have to set the valves again. It is damned nice to have all those parts back in one place again!
