Best way to get rid of orange peel in paint work.

It was a spray can job for my track bike.

It has 3 coats and I was hoping to smooth the top coat without taking too much away from it.

Any suggestions on how to best bring out the best in the paint??

You can try to wet sand with 2000 grit sandpaper and then use a compound like Meguiars Ultimate to polish it back up. What exactly do you mean when you say there is orange peel in the paint? How did that happen?

Orange peel, refers to a painters term that describes the texture of unfinished paintwork. Depending on how deep the "orange peel" is, I would start with 600 and progressively work toward 2000. IE: 600, 800, 1000, 1500 then 2000. (wet of course). Is it gloss or flat??? Are you going to clear coat it?

To know what to do with a paintjob gone South, the type paint should be known before a cure is attempted. Or one can trust in the Lord who said," Repaint and thin no more."

First step is to use good quality can paint..UPOL is what I like best. Its a british product. you can get it a Professional paint supply places and its marginally more expensive for the results you get its actually a bargain.

When you painted you should be wet sanding with 2000 grit between coats. Never dry sand. Then lay a REALLY good quality clearcoat (UPOL again) as thick as possible without running ( this actually takes quite a bit of skill and can make or break the final product). Then finish with G10 or G20, meguires will work also. I prefer the the products mention. I think you can get them in the land of OZ as well.

IMHO best thing is to wet sand between coats... Orange peel depending on how bad it is , is really not a big concern if you have your clear coat on in a Primo fashion.

I hope this helps but I think Rollin gave you the best response.

    :)

Yeah I am the cause. Its because when I was trying to get an even coat I'd get runs so I would put lighter coats which gave the very slight orange peel effect.

I haven't got an area to prep and paint and it was a best effort..

I did lighter coats and its extremely light orange peel. Almost not enough to care (especially since its a track bike) but its my first paint job and I'd like to get it as good as possible.

    Thanks all. Very helpful...

I've had mates come over and they think its fine (considering its a can job).

I think it can be better hence my question.

I had my eye on a compressor kit recently. next job will be using a proper paint gun compressor setup....

FYI - I would not take a can anywhere near my viffer.. For the tracky it was an acceptable compromise to get rid of the large areas where paint had peeled off from stickers..

Just paint it orange and tell your mates it's supposed to look like an orange or if they give you shit, a pomelo.

I'd say I will just tell anyone who criticises the paint to politely fk themselves ;)

Or buy a shitload of stickers...

Somebody famous must have said at one time or another, "There is more than one way to peel an orange."

If nobody famous ever said that, they should have..

This sticker thing could go viral with race fan clubs counting stickers on their fave riders bikes. This could exceed in some cases the number of "friends" some dudes have on facebook or hits on porn sites.

    ;)

Thank You for being so subtle in telling me to take my 2 cents and stick it where the sun don't shine. BTW, I'd be interested in having a conversation with the professional painter who achieves successful adhesion with 2000 between coats. It's ostensible to me that such a painter is preparing his work in a manner that I am not familiar with, although extremely curious about. My experience is that 2000 is reserved for color sanding and a foam pad with a micro compound for the final finish.

I agree. Davyto can be abrasive and anyone calling him on it has true grit.
