I got a noise at the counter sproket area when I get to 5th and 6th both on the road and on the center stand. Put a new chain on about a month ago and a new tire on last weekend. also vibraition with the noise. As soon as I pull in the clutch, both go away. The bike has only 20k mi. on it. Could I possably have a worn out bearing allready? I set the chain to about 1 inch of slack, Is that to much? Did I do something wrong,or am I screwed? Any Ideas out there?

Did the noise and vibration start with the new chain and tire?

Is the front sprocket or back worn, loose?

Do you oil your chain or just let it run dry for the last 20,000 miles?

All good questions. I did not notice the problem so much till I got the new tire. I had the tire checked. The noise is at the front sproket,Im sure of that. I did not put the first 17kmi. on her, only the last three. I dont think the spokets are worn but I will check them both more carefully in the morning. And I do lube the chain. I know I never noticed the vibration until here lately. It may have come up gradually. Im not sure. But the noise is strong at 4krpm in 5th and 6th gear.

If chain is too loose it may sometimes drag along the top of the swingarm, and if too tight can damage transmission output shaft bearing.

Get her up on centerstand, maybe remove sprocket cover, turn rear wheel by hand and check for noise location. Be sure there are no frozen links, especially that the master link is free to pivot at both ends and not pressed into place too tight.

Even more importantly, make sure chain is lined up with front and rear sprockets.

Ok new update on noise and vibration problem. But first thanks to all who have been so helpfull. I am in your dept. So off we go. The new chain has been one of the main variables in the equasion. ( dont think I spelled that right), In short the chain was too tight and this caused the noise. How ever the vibration lessend yet still exists. So I have been asking all the right question to alot of the right people, and I think I have it this time. When I changed the chain, I used the same sprokets. I was told, this was not the best idea. It seems the sproket can wear so finite that its hard to see the dips can wear uneven. this causes the new chain to move funky on the old sproket. And can cause a harmonic vib. My last bike had no chain, and before that I had been away from bikes for some twenty years. I ordered a new front sproket yesterday and I will get a new rear one when I can. We live,we learn.
