I have just bought a 1993 vfr, with 22,676 miles on her! Carbs needed cleaning, she needs fork seals and a battery. I Cleaned the carbs and have her running great, but below 1500 rpm's the clutch sounds big time nasty! Pulled springs off outer basket and they are Trash! Not the same highth wise visually! Can a guy replace the springs that are behind the outer basket which are behind the outer basket! I can grab outer basket and move it back and forth, (clutch plates are removed) and make make the clunking noise, outer basket moves but the gear does not! Is this a bad clutch basket? Thanks, rexter

you can buy springs. I suspect a carb cleaning and sync will be in order as well.

out of sync carbs will exacerbate any knock and clatter at low RPM because the engine isn't running balanced.

If I'm reading this correctly, the gear on the outer basket is broken loose from the assembly, so yes, it is bad. It may have shed some bits of metal during the separation process, too. I've never had one of those critters apart, but I'm assuming that the outer basket has some roller bearings that ride against the transmission mainshaft. Some bikes have a sleeve that goes over the mainshaft that protects it if the roller bearing fails, others do not. You should probably take a close look at that area when the basket comes off to see if it has been damaged.

bearings are good just that I can rotate outer basket cw and ccw alittle bit without gear moving. And it has the same noise that I hear at idle. If it is not to move, this is where my problem is. I can sync carbs till I'm blue in the face and will not stop this noise from the clutch. I just have to barely grab clutch lever and it stops, does not make the noise in revs over 1500 either.

I'm assuming you have the inner clutch removed; then I would expect you to be able to move the outer back and forth while taking up backlash in the gearset.

And it would clatter back and forth just like an out of balance motor does.

But being blue in the face would probably help this situation as well so go ahead and buy expensive parts before trying something that's free.

I don't think I've ever seen a clutch basket that is free to move from it's driven gear. I could be mistaken, as I've never come across that as a repair issue before. Have you disassembled it and inspected it?

    cuz it's never a problem?

I just pulled my spare clutch out of the box. The basket moves on the gear a fraction of an inch. The backside has springs for vibration dampening. I'll take a photo.

Go back and sync your carbs as I said. My 3rd gen has had the same symptoms fixed by repairing vacuum leaks and balancing the carbs. The engine being out of balance will make everything knock and slam.

Well, learn something new every day! Thanks, tinkerin. I've never seen that on an M/C clutch hub before, only on automotive clutch discs. I think the last clutch I had apart was the old 1100F, and it has a gear riveted right to the basket.

FWIW, I wasn't arguing your suggestions; my concern was that there was a mechanical failure waiting to happen.

it's all good. most folks here know you're no novice just throwing shit off the cuff. It never hurts to challenge assumptions and different people pick up on different clues or interpret the OP different ways.

That's the fun in internet troubleshooting....

TinkerinWstuff, I'll first install new cluth springs. I know they are bad! Put it back together, I did not take outer basket off. Wanted to know if it should move a fraction like ya said, before the dive into it. I was thinking the worst. Could bad clutch springs cause this to happen also? Should I get factory or could I get aftermarket springs? There are 2 other threads on this problem, they never finished or told what really was the problem. One guy took his bike to a dealer for carb sync and the problem was worse. One had 16,000 miles the other had like 77,000 miles. The trouble shooting in download manual, has nothing on chatter that I could find.

bad clutch would cause slipping of the clutch under load. I'd agree that it's a good idea to replace them if they are out of spec.

In my opinion, I doubt the compression springs are related to the knocking. I'd compare online price to OEM from my local dealer. Don't forget to check metal disks for flatness and wear disks for thickness and burned faces.

many come to ask for help, few stick around or bother to report back.

    Good luck

Tink, I haven't even left the garage with her yet! Would not let her Idle unless my sister had her harley running! Compression springs are bad! I do know that the clutch was replaced just before 2nd owner bought it in 2003. Dealer told him it needed a new clutch for some reason? The 2nd owner only has put maybe 500 to a 1000 miles since, it has sat ever since. Supposedly started every ounce in awhile. If a clutch is worn out and the springs are bad, could this cause it also? Maybe the first owner told the second owner about it and never had it done! I don't know, Just going by 2nd owner's words! It's my problem now, plan on keeping her for the long hall anyway! I have to order factory fork seals, and get a new battery, spark plugs and k&n filter Put new clutch plates and springs and let ya know what happens. Thank's Tink

Could be that the PO got the stack height wrong, didn't soak the plates, used old plates or put in car oil that caused abnormal initial wear.

When you replace, follow the instructions to the letter, make sure the stack is ordered correctly, soak in good quality motorcycle oil and measure the stack height and compare to specs. Also check every spring for height and wear/tension

    Should cure all

I'm tell'in ya It is in the cluth! Some way some how! New clutch plates and springs should fixer. But if not and needs carb sync, I wiil send them too squirrelman! He had done my "86 carbs also! Need to change plugs, air filter, and clutch before i dive deeper! The tension springs were and visably bad! My "86 would run on 3 cycinders and had no clutch chatter, with water in the gas! Will let ya guy's know what caused it, K! Clutches do go bad from sitting, I have a 200X three wheeler that sat a couple of years and was slipping like a mother! Did not make the chatter noise, I hear from this beauty.

carbs must be sync'd on the bike they are going on.

the knock won't be fixed until the carbs are sync'd and/or cleaned. I'm certain the knock is from the motor running unbalanced.

This thing sat for so long, looked at friction plates and they are flat. But, I also have a Morgan Carb Tune Pro II on order from England to do the carb sync! Even if the new clutch does the trick, I'll still do the carb sync. All my OT Money is sunk it 2 this 93! But rewards of riding her 1 day will pay off! Will keep ya updated! Rexter

Tink was right! I put in new clutch and springs, spark plugs, K&N air filter, received my carb tune pro from England. After installing new clutch and the other stuff, knock was alot better, but there. After syncing carbs, it has vanished! Thank you Tink! Now we have a finished thread on clutch chatter or knocking! Carb syncing works!
