I have two problems on my 84 VF700 restore project. The bike sat outside for 5 years unused, and I am trying to bring it back. For a while things were going great, but now...

    1. Bike starter is on again off again. sometimes I thumb the starter and nothing happens, other times it jumps to life. When I say nothing, I mean nothing, no noises at all. I fiddle with the gear position thinking it might be the neutral switch, but the neutral light comes on with no issues. I have not found which thing I fiddle with makes it work.

    2. the brake light was not coming on, so I took the back end apart. I found this wire unattached. it comes out of the blue connector pictured. [IMG]

any ideas where that should go?

I think the brake light is a bad socket. With my multimeter I get power to the quick connectors, but plug them in and the brake light is intermittent.
    Thanks, Scott

that blue connector is not OEM, if its part of the brake switch and not the actual bike harness REPLACE THAT ISH NOW. trust me, ghetto rigged wires=electrical HELL. grab ye a soldering iron and learn how to solder well if ye want good connections. and heatshirnk your wires.

the switch may be a bad cable, a loose plug, bad switch, any number of random things. possibly even a clutch safety. I"ll look at my bike later and see what my VF shows that may contribute.

OK, I went out and hooked up the multi meter to the wire, it is hot with the ignition key on. The blue connector is hooked into a black/ brown wire. So maybe someone in the past had it to hijack power for something? Great, I had a loose, open, hot wire just hanging around in the back. I can cut it out, solder, and shrink wrap that part out.

Is there a way to test the clutch safety?

    Thanks, Scott

It was a starter solenoid. Local shop had one, and it is back on the road.
