I recently bought a '96 VFR. It starts and runs very well with a little gas in the tank. However, when I fill the tank, it will not start. Once in awhile the engine will catch but will not run long. Any thoughts what I should be looking for?
I'm new to this site. I posted this in the blog section too - opps.

is it a carburetor setup? Check and see if there is a leak in the line where when its full it leaks. Or, maybe its not getting air in the tank so gas isn't reaching the carbs. I would just start at the gas lines and make sure they aren't cracked.

    This is a tough one.....

First check that the fuel filler cap is venting properly.

Next, are you using enough choke, not enough, or too much for too long ???

I can't imagine this being attributed to anything other than a venting issue.

It seems like the carbs get fuel then without a vent the tank makes a suction and doesn't allow fuel to go into the carbs. Kind of like holding a straw at the top while its full of liquid. Let go of the straw the liquid falls. HAS to be something simple.......

What about filling up the tank and then trying to start it with the gas cap off, or at least opened to provide adequate venting. That might tell you if the problem is with the gas cap, as Squirrelman mentioned. Doesn't cost a dime, and takes all of 3 seconds.

If that doesn't work, then make your next move. Lines would be my next choice before digging into the carbs.
