Hey guys , was wondering if any one knows of any pre-fab overflow coolant bottles molded for fitting sliders on a 2002 VFR ??? . Found a company in London but they wont just sell me the bottle , you have to buy the kit and its pretty pricey + shipping . Alrighty then , thanks and keep the shinning side up and the rubber side down .

Never actually seen a site that sells them, but I saw a pic of a 6th gen with sliders that didn't need and cuts in the fairings, and didn't require a different coolant reservoir. I'll keep looking for them

LighTech Frame Sliders with Magnesium Pucks (No Cut) - OPPRACING Products

Anybody here ever use these or hear anything about them? They are inexpensive but the installation manual provided on the product page deosn't tell you anything. I would also be worried that you could do some frame damage if you were in a slide, perhaps the mounting hardware could break the threads out of the fairing. Not sure how likely that is though...

The location does not look good for your shim.......There are several other with better location safe.
    Try search for frame slider

You can buy the coolant bottle seperately, that I know, as I did it. Unfortunately the place I bought from has gone belly up. But they were just the sellers, not the manufacturer, so you should still be able to get it. Do a search for R&G sliders or have your local dealer do one. I think also Thurn over in Germany sells a solo coolant bottle.

I own a pair, I find them an acceptable compromise since they do not require hacking the fairings and replacing or modifying the overflow bottle. They were a 10 minute install - you just remove the rear engine mount bolts and put these in instead. Repeat - like other sliders these are attached to the engine mounts - the bolts just pass through the frame. The only slightly tricky bit was replacing the aluminum spacer/guard above the chain - you can see it if you look under the frame from below. About the shins - yup, I can tell they are there, but only while seated on the bike pushing it around the garage; they do not interfere when riding in any way. I suppose some folks will be driven insane by their presence, but I have mostly forgotten they are there. YMMV. The big complaint some folks have are that they may tip the bike onto the radiators in a fall at speed. I agree, this looks likely. I bought these for protection against low speed drops or tip overs; I have not "tested" them yet, but they look like they will suffice for that purpose. I expect eventually I will bite the bullet and install other sliders, I'm just not there yet. It did occur to me to leave the LighTech sliders on with the new ones - might look cool AND be very effective to have 2 sets of sliders! -VFRGeek

I have a set of the LighTech no-cuts and a set of the R&G through fairing style frame sliders and will be doing that very thing VFRGeek.

Thanks stosh. Quick question since you own a set - the web site claims these have "magnesium" pucks. Mine look remarkably like the conventional plastic material. No complaints - since magnesium DOES burn, I am happy with the plastic. Which style of pucks did you receive ?

I bought a set of the R&G's and they didn't come with the coolant overflow bottle.

Just a heads-up Spike,Thurn Motorsport no longer sells that coolant overflow bottle you mentioned. I tried to order one this past winter and they told me it's no longer available, but they did tell me they do offer an alternate coolant overflow bottle that should do the trick.

Don't waste your time with that one either Duccmann. The thing is so tiny that I bet if you concentrated real hard, hackered up a big honkin' looger, and spit it into that alternate coolant bottle you'd prolly overfill it and get some on your hand. :eek:hwell:

It ain't gonna hold much coolant, see for yourself.

As far as sliders go.... I figure that the fairing makes a pretty good slider. Very little chance of damaging the frame or engine as the surface area is greater and my bike already has it without additional cost.

Of course the type of accident makes a difference.

If you really have a bottle installed and need to move it consider moving it from the stock location Up under the fairing center might be ideal. .

You can use a much smaller coolant bottle than you think.
You can make one out of almost anything.

All it is ,is a container to catch the small about of overflow so that the radiator can remain full and have no air pockets.

IT is a container that has one opening on the top going downwards to atmosphere in case IT overflows.
The other opening comes from the fill neck of the radiator and goes into the top of the overflow bottle down inside, almost to the bottom of the overflow bottle.

You can make one out of one of those anodized drink containers (different colors) and just thread two brass hose barb fittings into it.
If you do it that way, just put the hose from the radiator fill neck going to the bottom of the overflow container.

    Many ways to do it.

    Try this....
Take the coolant overflow bottle off the bike.
Run a hose from the filler neck down to the bottom of the frame.
Take it out for a hard ride on a hot day.
Now bring it back to your driveway and park it.
Put a jar under the overflow hose and see how much it pukes into the bottle.

    See what I mean?

Before coolant recovery systems,(before you were born), cars would puke coolant on the ground at supermarkets in the summer -all the time.
But cars used only water back then, then very small amounts of coolant(30%). Then they started using 100% coolant. Now they mix it 50/50.
Motorcycles were not water cooled yet.

The reason they put the coolant "recovery" bottle on is because they found out pets like to drink it ,because the coolant is sweet and it would make them sick or worse.

    It is a environmental protection.

I think with R&G for some reason, even though you needed the bottle, pretty much, they did have it as two seperate part numbers. But the retailers could combine them, or at the very least whoever you bought it from should have said, "hey, you will also need this when you install them." The nice thing about them offering them seperately is that if you had them, and your coolant bottle needed to be replaced, as mine did, you could just buy the coolant bottle, without having to buy the whole "kit" over again. Which is what I did, which saved me some $$. Or, if you had an opportunity to "test" the sliders, you wouldn't have to buy the whole kit over again with another coolant bottle.
