    Greetings everyone,
I'm new to the forum (found it while researching VFRs).
I am looking at getting back into riding this summer (sold my VTX1800 back in '05) and am pretty sure I want a VFR.

I did the cruiser thing for a few years and had my fill. I've been looking at ST bikes and really like the BMW R12RT/K12GT bikes, but besides the high cost I'm about 250 miles from the closest dealership. Considering the number of potential issues I would be nervous about being so far from the dealer.

After comparing the ST1300 and VFR, it seems like the VFR fits my desires more: Mostly commuting (~5mi one way), cruising around town/weekend longer rides, and the occasional long distance trip. If I can get some saddlebags and wind screen I should be set.

I've done a bit of searching and looks like I would prefer the 98-01 vs 02+ due to the potential VTEC issues with the 02+ models. I'm hoping to find a decent one for ~$3K.
Does my thought process make sense?

Any thoughts or input is always appreciated.

    Thanks!

Comfortable working on carbs ?? Fi didn't solve any problems, just provided new and different ones.

Get a 4th gen VFR ! I don't think they improved the handling in any way on the 800s, and they're heavier.

I thought about the 4th gen bikes, but I got spoiled after having a bike with FI (especially in the winter). I don't think I want to mess with carbs anymore. At least not on a bike I want to ride all the time. I really like the simplicity of start-and-go.

Congrats and good call on the year! (That's always going to start some shit!).

After 3 years, I just fit my ride with some Nelson Rigg Saddlebags. I don't do any long journeys - at least not yet - and the bags I got are great for an overnight trip, or just to throw some extra stuff in(rain gear, shield, etc.).

Many folks consider the 5th gen the best VFR and several consider the 98 and 99 to be the best examples due to something aboutnthe header i think... They are all good though. I like the bump in power on the 5th vs the 4th. Some people say it's not there, but it sure feels like it when riding them back to back. Welcome to vfrworld.

    Thanks!
Yeah, once I get all the initial maintenance done (wash/polish, fluids, chain lube) I will start looking to build the "ideal" accessory list. Definitely includes bags, seat and grips. I'll wait until after my first riding season to see if I'll need a touring windshield, heli-bars or lower pegs.

I'm trying to dig through all the luggage threads now to find a good tank bag + saddle/top bags. (I'd love hard bags, but they are a bit cost prohibitive)

I can't wait to get out on some long rides!
