I have had difficulty with the fuel petcock valve on my '84 VF500F and after having no luck locating a new valve to replace it, I began entertaining alternative means by which to solve the problem. My main question (to all of you more experienced VF500F owners) is can I just remove the entire petcock valve assembly and go gravity fed on the fuel with an inline valve to shut off the fuel when the bike is parked? If so, is there anything else that you know on the subject that may be useful knowledge to me? Thanks
If the vacuum valve on the stock petcock has failed the petcock can be modified to bypass this. Removing the fuel pump is A-OK as gravity fed fuel delivery has been road tested and approved for the '84 and '85 models.
+1, I'm gravity-fed on my '84, although I still have my vacuum system intact. Fuel pump was more pain than it was worth. Here's Jamie's site's walkthrough on how to modify the petcock for full-grav: Daugherty Motorsports - Tank Valve Petcock Modification
